Hello. My XP was getting a blue screen that said "Bad System Config" and kept the computer from booting. I first installed a new ram, and the problem still existed. Then I wiped the system and did a complete reinstall, and it worked for a day or two, but now the problems are back. The computer just randomly restarts. Sometimes, it won't boot at all. It comes up with the "Start Windows Normally/Last Good Config/Safe Mode etc" screen. Sometimes no matter which option you chose, it will just restart and make it back to that same screen. The only time I get it to start is sometimes, safe mode works. Then in safe mode, I'll press "restart" and the computer will finally start normally.
And when it does, I get the message, "One of the files containing the system's registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful."

Here's what Im thinking, computer is restarting instead of a blue screen because of the setting on the computer which sets to automatically restart it. How do I change this setting?
Now, I know this probably not enough info for you to help, so whatever info you need, I can definitely give it to you. Any ideas what the problem is? Could it be a piece of hardware?

Thank you so much for reading all that, I'm not a computer whiz.

Here's what Im thinking, computer is restarting instead of a blue screen because of the setting on the computer which sets to automatically restart it. How do I change this setting?

There are two ways to change the setting:
  • From within Windows
How To Disable the Automatic Restart on System Failure in Windows XP
  • When first starting the computer (this is a one-time only solution if you are unable to load Windows normally and will not apply after the next restart).
  • Start tapping F8 after pressing the ON button, until you are presented with the Windows Advanced Options Menu.
  • Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to highlight Disable automatic restart and press <ENTER>.
The system will attempt to start normally, and if it crashes will stop and display a BSOD (blue screen of death) error message, rather than simply re-start.

You said: "I wiped the system and did a complete reinstall"
The meaning of this could be quite ambiguous: What exactly did you do?
  • How exactly did you "wipe the system" and what exactly did you use to do the "wiping"?
  • Did you "wipe" a partition only or did you "wipe" the whole hard drive?
  • How did you re-install Windows XP and with what?
  • Using a recovery partition?
  • Using a genuine retail Microsoft Windows XP CD?
  • Using an OEM Windows XP CD?

If you get the chance with Windows running normally, please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy, and post a link to it in this thread.

This is a convenient and accurate way of providing us with details of your computer specifications.

If you get the chance with Windows running either normally or in Safe Mode with networking, please download BlueScreenView (in zip file)
  • Extract (right-click > Extract all) the contents of bluescreenview.zip.
  • Double-click on the BlueScreenView.exe file, to run the program. (No installation is required.)
  • When scanning is done (usually complete by the time the interface appears), go ...
    • Edit > Select All
    • File > Save Selected Items, and save the report to your Desktop as BSOD.txt.
    • Close the BlueScreenView window.
  • Open BSOD.txt using Notepad and go ...
    • Edit > Select All
    • Edit > Copy, and then paste the entire contents of the text file into your next reply.
(Let us know if no information is reported in the BlueScreenView interface: This means that there are no minidumps saved in the default location.)

I suspect there may be a problem with the hard drive, so I suggest testing that as a first step.

Test the hard drive. If you tell us the hard drive manufacturer's name (brand name) and model we can point you to the most appropriate diagnostic utility to use. It is best to use the hard drive manufacturer's own diagnostic utility, but Seagate's tool will work OK on most brands. The diagnostic tool is run from a bootable CD (Windows does not need to be working. The first two steps are done on a working computer, while the third step is to boot the ailing computer with the CD that you create in the first two steps.)

:step1: Please download SeaTools for DOS (CD) from Seagate's SeaTools for DOS web page

or use the following direct download link to download the latest version of SeaTools for DOS:
Download SeaTools for DOS ISO Image

The downloaded file name is SeaToolsDOS223ALL.ISO
:step2: Burn the downloaded .ISO image to a CD using the appropriate burning software.
  • If you do not already have a suitable burning program for writing .ISO images to disc ...
    • Download and install ImgBurn.
Ensure that you UN-check the box agreeing to install the Ask toolbar during the installation.
    • Place a new (blank) CD disc in the drive tray.
    • Choose Write image file to disc.
    • Under Source, click on the Browse button: Navigate to and select the .ISO file that you wish to burn.
    • Place a check-mark in the box beside Verify.
  • Click Posted Image

When the CD has been burned and verified as successful, it will be bootable.

:step3: Boot from the CD.
  • (You may need to access the BIOS Setup Menu or the Boot Menu and change the boot order to enable booting from CD before hard drive.)
  • From Basic tests on the Main Menu, run the Short test and then the Long test.

(The long test will take some considerable time to complete.)
The results will be shown as either a PASS or FAIL.
There is a chance that during the Long test, you may be offered the opportunity to attempt repairs on the hard drive:
  • If so, go ahead and attempt to do so, but ONLY after backing up all important personal files.
Note: You may wish to view the following ...
Please let us know the results of the tests.

When you can, include the make and model number of the problematic hard drive. If you do choose to use SeaTools, you will see the model number (and maybe the make) when SeaTools first detects the hard drive.

Thank you for your thorough reply!

As for the wiping, I pressed F11 at startup and started a system recovery thing. It asked for a CD, I put in a recovery CD that we made a long time ago.

Here are the results from BlueScreenViewer

Honestly, my CD drive works off and on, so I don't think I can use SeaTools. I could try if I guess, but I doubt it will work. Have are we doing so far? What else do you need?

I would like you to follow the directions in the link provided for running Speccy and publish the result: Then simply provide a link in your next post so that we can look at the published report. That will provide a lot more information than the snapshot you attached.

The BlueScreenView report is not overly helpful, but does indicate a likely hardware problem, and it could well be the hard drive, but it is by no means definitive. If possible, could you please zip up some of the recent minidump files and attach them to your next post. I might be able to get a better idea of exactly what the problem is.
Please zip up the last 10 minidumps and attach to your reply so I can have a closer look.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump <<< folder
  • Click on the most recent minidump file.
  • Hold down the <Ctrl> key, and click on the 9 next-most recent minidump files to also select them.
  • Release the <Ctrl> key.
  • Now, right-click on one of the selected files > Send to ... > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
The zip file will be located in the same place (the Minidump folder).
  • Attach the zip file to your next reply.
When you click on Add Reply, you will see the facility to attach a file just below the box where you type your message.

Try booting from a CD and testing your hard drive. We really need to do this: If you have trouble with the optical drive, can you replace it temporarily with one from another machine? Can you put the problematic hard drive in another machine and test it in that machine? Buying and fitting a new optical drive would probably be a good move? If it turns out to be impossible for you to arrange to be able to use a bootable CD to test the hard drive:
  • We could possibly do something with a bootable USB flashdrive: Do you know if your machine has the capability of booting a USB device (flashdrive or external hard drive)? If the machine is too old it will not be able to boot from a USB device, but I am guessing it is not that old.
  • If your machine is running well enough, it might also be possible for you to use the Windows version of the diagnostic tool(s) and run it from within Windows (not as reliable as using a bootable CD, but we may not have a choice?

From the Speccy snapshot, the hard drive is a Western Digital PATA. Here are instructions for using the Western Digital diagnostic utility to test the hard drive (if you wish to use that instead of the SeaTools utility). The exact same tool is used for all Western Digital hard drives, so do not concern yourself about the reference to a different model in the following instructions .... (and if the WD utility gives you trouble, then use the SeaTools utility).

Check your system HDD with the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic utility ...

:step1: Go to the WD Caviar Black Downloads page and download Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD)
  • Unzip (right-click > Extract all) the file when you have downloaded it, to get to the .ISO image file.
(Read the instructions while you are there.)

:step2: If you do not already have a suitable burning program for writing .ISO images to disc ...

  • (You may need to change the boot order to enable booting from CD before hard drive.)
  • Run the Short/Quick test and then the Long/Extended test].
There is a chance that during the Long test, you may be offered the opportunity to attempt repairs on the hard drive:
    • If so, go ahead and attempt to do so, but ONLY after backing up all important personal files.
  • Please let us know the results of the tests.

Sorry, for the long reply wait.
The hardrive was tested with no errors.
The minidumps are attached.
Speccy won't let my publish the snapshot without an internet connection. Is there someother way I can get you that?

That optical drive of yours (ts-h552d) was notorious for driver issues, firmware issues and hardware issues several years ago. I don't know if they have cleaned things up but if you have weirdness or the blue screens come when you are doing something with it or when you open My Computer, then you might want to disconnect it and see how the system runs.
I read this thread and then I looked at the Speccy screenshot and instantly recognized that drive. I see lots of drives so it had obviously left an impression on me in the past :)

Please run memtest86+ for 24 hours unless you see an error beforehand.

Test the memory (RAM).

Memory needs to be tested outside of Windows, so memtest86+ is run from a bootable CD.

:step1: To make a bootable CD with memtest86+:
  • Extract the downloaded zip file:
    • In Windows XP, right-click on the zip file and choose Extract all.
The contents of the zip file (the .ISO image file) will be extracted to a folder in the same location as your zip file.
  • Burn the .ISO image to CD: If you do not already have a suitable burning program for writing .ISO images to disc ...
    • Download and install ImgBurn.
    • Ensure that you UN-check the box agreeing to install the Ask toolbar during the installation.
  • When the CD has been burned and verified as successful, it will be bootable.

:step2: Boot from the newly created CD.
  • You may need to configure BIOS or the Boot Menu to boot first from the CD.
  • memtest86+ will begin running automatically: You need do nothing else at this time.
  • Allow memtest86+ to run un-interrupted.
See the screenshots in this informative link: Diagnose with Memtest86+

There MUST be NO errors what-so-ever:
  • If you see an error, stop the test.
  • Then proceed to test each stick of RAM separately to sort the good from the bad.
A minimum test for some confidence in the result, should be 7 full passes (each "pass" is a series of different types of tests), with NO errors.
  • Allow memtest86+ to run for 24 hours for maximum confidence in the test result.
memtest86+ will continue running until you stop it:
  • Press the <ESCAPE> key to re-boot the computer, removing the memtest86+ CD.

I'm a little hesitate to run a 24 hour test when the computer is my bedroom. Its gonna be bright and loud right?
Also, I just put in a new RAM and it still had the problem.
