This problem started 5 nights ago and ran 3 consecutive nights. I have since been running "cures" but am not sure if I'm getting a false positive in SAFE mode or not.
1st, I use a tabbed browser so I often have more than 1 window open. 3 nights in a row 1 of the windows that was open would exhibit the dreaded "rush to the bottom of the page as quickly as possible, oscillate there and not let me do anything else with it" syndrome. If I had 4 sites open it would do this on 3 of them. It did NOT do this on my "home page", which is my Comcast page. My first solution was to shut down and then use System Restore to restore to an earlier time. that worked until night 2 when exactly the same thing happened and I did a System Rstore again. Then I downloaded Hijackthis and ran that. It found CWS.Msconfig variant and supposedly cleaned it. But the same thing happened the 3rd night. Ran Hijackthis, did not find CWS.Msconfig; ran HJT in SAFE mode, found CWS and deleted. BUT, every time I run HJT in "normal" mode I don't find CWS and every time I run HJT in SAFE mode I find it. I have not had the dreaded "rush to the bottom...." syndrome for the last 2 nights but I've also been running HJT (and the other "cures" that are installed, AVG, etc. and TrendMicro's online scan) each of the last 2 nights. And, when I did get the "rush to..." syndrome it wasn't until late at night each of the nights that I got it and I had been working on my computer and on the internet all day each of those days. The point being that when I did get the "rush to..." it seemed to come from out of the blue and I now haven't gotten it bit when I RUN hjt SAFE it says that I have it and deletes it.
Please help.
Thank you.
My system is a Dell Workstation 370, Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz, 1MB memory, 80 G hard drive
XP SP2
Comcast cable connection

Hello sailor67 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any problems in this HiajckThis log. Post back the specifics of what is being reported (what program is finding the problem, the exeact information as to what the problem item is etc). Also provide a few more details on the "rush to..." problem. What browser is being used, what is being rushed to the bottom (the program window, the tab window or what) and what is being displayed in the window when it goes down.

Let's also run a different scanner and see what it shows us. Download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here along with a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in.

OT

Old Timer,
thanks for taking the time to reply to this.
browser; Maxthon (an IE tabbed browser)
OS; XP Pro
Dell WorkStation 370, 2.8Mhz, 1G memory, 80G HD
the first time I might have had 4 or 5 windows (web pages) that I had opened "tabbed" on the tool bar and the web page that I was viewing at the time did a fast scroll to the bottom of the page and there wasn't anything that I could do to move it off the bottom. That happened with any page that I had opened except for, oddly enough, my home page which is a Comcast page. I could close those pages, which I did, and did a System Restore, which seemed to take care of the problem until late the next night when exactly the same thing happened. The second time I ran CWShredder, in SAFE mode, it reported that it had removed a CWS Msconfig variant. I then ran all my other scans, which you can see are ewido, Microsoft AntiSpyware, AVG Free, Ad-Aware and Spybot, and I also ran Trend Micro and BitDefender's online scans. Then the exact same thing happened a third night in a row. I can't tell you specifically what web page I was viewing any of those nights but each night it would have been something innocuous. Since that night I have not had the problem of any open web pages automatically scrolling down to the bottom of the page on their own, but I've been running CWShredder almost every night in SAFE mode (it does NOT show up in normal mode and btw I had been rebooting into SAFE mode through RUN rather than F8 - does that make a difference?) and every time I run it it claims that it finds CWS Config Variant and removes it (and still does). But I've also read that CWShredder can come up with a false positive for MSConfig Variant, which was a concern after it seemed that I was no longer having the problem of the automatic scroll, ergo, asking someone w/ a lot more knowledge than I to look at a HJT log.
So, ran your program and another HJT scan. Logs for both follow:

WinPFind
WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi sailor67. There is definitely not a CWS infection here so I would recommend not running CWShredder. It is made to be used only when an actual infection is present and if run when no infection is present could actually remove valid operating system files.

As far as the Maxthon browser goes, I took a peek at the Maxthon support site and they still have a large number of outstanding bug issues. The problem being experienced is more than likely a known outstanding bug or one they do not know about yet. You might want to report it in their support forum and see if anyone else is having the same issue.

As far as both of the submitted logs, they are both clean. I do not see any problems in either one.

Cheers.
