Hello,

Above log is one made in Safe mode... I actually need one made in normal mode, because I have no clue right now what is still present or not.

Anyway, go back in safe mode and perform next steps:

I see you have PartyPoker installed.
If you didn't install it with intension to play with, I suggest you uninstall it, because in most cases, these programs are supported by malware, getting installed without asking for it and also lead you to sites where malware is lurking.
If you do play it, then leave it alone.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [licli] li.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell321.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\intell321.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlfaCleaner] C:\Program Files\AlfaCleaner\AlfaCleaner.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellSupport] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe" /startup
<= not required
O16 - DPF: {360E40AA-EE8B-4101-BA67-0CAD3F7A48DD} (Nyoko Downloader Class) - http://www.riverbelle.com/download_helper/Nyoko.cab
O23 - Service: AlfaCleanerService - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\AlfaCleaner\ACServer.exe (file missing)

Check next entries if you decided to uninstall Partypoker:

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

sc delete AlfaCleanerService

Click OK

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\intell321.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\li.exe
C:\Program Files\AlfaCleaner <== folder

*Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Reboot back to normal mode.

* Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report together with a new hijackthislog.

Ok, did all the steps up to returning to Normal Mode. The computer will NOT completely boot in Normal Mode. Here is one of the error messages that I get:

bcmwltry.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022). Click on OK to terminate the application.

I also get an explorer.exe error message occasionally.

Here's the most recent HijackThis log file:

I went ahead and ran Panda's scan while in Safe Mode, as I can NOT boot otherwise (much less, get online). Here are the results from that scan:

Hi, it looks like you are also dealing with an infected wininet.dll

Delete next files:

C:\WINDOWS\uninstDsk.exe
C:\zdj.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Stevie Stingray\Desktop\AlfaCleaner.lnk

* Download smitRem and save the file to your desktop.
Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name smitrem.
* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

REBOOT!!

bcmwltry.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022). Click on OK to terminate the application.

It looks like your Broadcom Corporation Wireless Network software got corrupted.
I also see Dell Wireless and Intel\PROSetWired, so not sure what you actually use.. so better to uninstall and reinstall what you use.

Post the log from smitrem, which you will find on your C:\ with the name smitrem.txt in your next reply.

As far as which is actually used, I'm not certain either as I did not set up the internet on this computer. How would I find out which is being used, so to repair? And where do I find a good copy of wininet.dll?

Thanks yet again!!!

It looks like there are no other versions of wininet.dll present on your system unfortunately.

What we can try here is to disinfect the one present on your system..
The only problem is, wininet.dll is always in use, so that's why scanners can't disinfect it. Some can though.

But we can try it in another way as well..
Go to your C:\Windows\System32-folder and search for wininet.dll in there.
Once found, rightclick on it and choose copy
Then go to your desktop and choose paste. So a copy of wininet.dll should be present on your desktop.

Then reboot your computer.

After reboot, perform this online scan:

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Once the scan finished, choose for CURE files -- don't choose for delete!!!

Then go to next site:

http://virusscan.jotti.org/

On top you'll find: File to upload and scan.
Now browse to the wininet.dll present on your desktop. Don't browse to the one present in your C:\Windows\System32-folder, because we know that one is infected. I want to be sure that the one present on your desktop got disinfected.
Click submit and let it scan.
Copy and Paste the results of the jotti scan in your next reply.

It's better you contact the person as well who installed the wireless for you..; he should know which one you are using now, because I can't figure it out myself as I see 2 being used ( Dell Wireless and Intel\PROSetWired ) and you get errors about another one as well ( Broadcom Corporation Wireless Network ). So better to ask him/her he does this for you and uninstall and reinstall what you need.

Ok, we made progress here... we have now a clean copy of wininet.dll

Ok, to make it a bit more easier for you... we can use smitrem again, but before you do, I want you to copy the cured wininet.dll present on your desktop to next folder:

C:\Windows\System32\dllcache-folder

This is a hidden system folder, so to reveal it, perform next:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Please hide your hidden files and folders afterwards again, because above instructions to set your system to show all files, unhide legit files and folders as well.
And I don't want you to delete them because they may look suspicious. To hide them again, just perform the above instructions in the opposite way.

The reason why I ask you to put it in the dllcache folder is because smitrem will find the wininet.dll there then and can replace it with the bad one present in the C:\Windows\System32-folder after renaming, so you don't have to do this manually. (renaming, replacing etc)
Smitrem will also get rid again of the other leftovers being present and restore other settings.

So after copying the disinfected wininet.dll from your desktop to your C:\Windows\ssystem32\dllcache, run smitrem again.

REBOOT afterwards.

Post the smitrem log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
We'll deal with the rest later... most important part ffor the moment is here that the wininet.dll gets restored.

Can you also look in your softwarelist ( start > controlpanel > software > add/remove programs) if Alfacleaner is present there and uninstall it.

Hello,

Check and fix next entry in hijackthis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlfaCleaner] C:\Program Files\AlfaCleaner\AlfaCleaner.exe

Then delete next folder:

C:\Program Files\AlfaCleaner

Can you doublecheck something for me please?
because as long you can't startup in normal mode due to the corrupt install of the wireless software being present, smitrem can't also perform its task properly.

So, let's check if the wininet.dll present in your C:\Windows\System32-folder is disinfected now.
So can you upload and scan that one also at http://virusscan.jotti.org/ ?
Post the results in your next reply.

I also see that oleext.dll is still present in your C:\Windows\System32-folder. Normally smitrem deals with this as well, but as long you can't boot in normal mode, it won't delete.
So rename the oleext.dll present in your system32-folder to oleext.old
then reboot.
After reboot, delete oleext.old

Concerning your problem with this error you are getting and the reason why you can't boot in normal mode again:

bcmwltry.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022). Click on OK to terminate the application.

This must be related with your Dell Wireless WLAN -- something that got corrupted or an incompatibility problem.
It's better you start a new thread concerning this issue in the hardware part of this forum, because I don't really have much knowledge about hardware and especially not about Dell Wireless issues:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/7/internal-hardware/

But let's solve the problem with Alfacleaner and the infected wininet.dll here first. )

I ran HijackThis and had it fix
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlfaCleaner] C:\Program Files\AlfaCleaner\AlfaCleaner.exe
This folder, C:\Program Files\AlfaCleaner, was nowhere to be found, oddly.

I went to Jotti's and scanned the wininet.dll file that was located in C:\Windows\System32. Here are the results:

Service load:
0% 100%
File: wininet.dll
Status:
OK (Note: this file has been scanned before. Therefore, this file's scan results will not be stored in the database)

I renamed oleext.dll to oleext.old, then went to reboot. I didn't manage to get F5 pressed quickly enough, so it started to boot in Normal Mode. I figured I was going to have to reboot again and attempt to get into Safe Mode, but amazingly, the normal boot completed and I am running in Normal Mode now!!! I deleted the oleext.old file. What do you suggest next?

Thanks again and again for your help with this! It is much appreciated!!

OMG!! That is good news you can boot in normal mode again, so I guess it was actually the wininet.dll after all which caused that error as well for your wireless software, because A LOT of programs installed on your system need that wininet.dll... and when it is/was infected...

Can you post a new hijackthislog from normal mode now? As a final checkup.

Does everything seem to be fixed now? BTW, I went ahead and d/l'ed and installed Spybot - S&D, as this comp only had Ad-Aware on it. I followed the instructions pinned somewhere in this forum for setting up Spybot. Thanks miekiemoes for your personal help and thanks to others at this forum for posting great information to refer to!!

Hi Leeanne,

I still have a small question. I see you used msconfig, because it is present in your log as this:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

This entry is responsible for the message you got at startup that something was changed in your system configuration. So, you may check and fix above entry also in hijackthis so you won't get that message anymore.

But what I want to know if you disabled entries via startup in msconfig or not.. because bad entries needs to get deleted and not disabled. So it's better to take a look first and perform next:

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:

regedit /e peek1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg"
regedit /e peek2.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder"
type peek1.txt >> startup.txt
type peek2.txt >> startup.txt
del peek*.txt
start notepad startup.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the batch must look after you created it: Posted Image
Doubleclick on look.bat and post the contents of it in your next reply.
