[i]I am on Microsoft xp home edition PC and have the spysherrif BUG This is the information i posted a day ago:
[i]I have a virus that is called SpySherrif. Its hovers on my desktop and has turned the destop black. There is a warning in red that says "WARNING ! SPYWARE DETECTED ON YOUR COMPUTER. install antivirus or antispyware software to clear your computer. View a list of top spyware removers here"

I have been using some instructions posted on this website , and downloaded Cleanup!

I am just about to use HijackThis but dont want to make a mistake and delete something that will affect the things that are harmless.
Please help.

Thanks

THIS IS THE REPLY I GOT FROM SOMEONE:

Hi There

I have read your post and I think it would be wise for you to post a HijackThis log for an expert to review. Do not use HijackThis if you don't really know what you are doing as you will do damage!

I recommend you follow the HijackThis preparation guide which can be found here. It is important that you follow the guide closely. A number of scans will be run which may well fix your problem.

As the guide says, after you have completed the scans that are recommended, please post your "HijackThis" log in a new topic in the forum found here. Please add your system infomation and also what problems you are having. Please be patient, and a HJT team member will help you to clean up your system

David

Some of the software i tried to download as the guide advised is as follws
1. SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY= got an error message saying (invalid floating point operation)

2. ADWARE SE = Could not open this file. Got an error message saying Adware xe ha encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. (send error report to microsoft or not option)

3. HOUSECALL ANTIVIRUS = was slow to process and never opened.

4. MCAFEE STINGER = downloaded and scanned computer successfully.

5. I think i already have a norton firewall.

6. WINDOWS UPDATES FROM http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com = Recieved a notice saying, 'your current security settings prohibit running activeX Controls on this page. As a result the page may not display properly'

Download smitRem.exe ©noahdfear, and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Please click: Start--> Control Panel--> Add or Remove Programs--> Uninstall (if found) any instances of:
Hotbar

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Close ewido anti-malware.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
    • Enter your Country
    • Enter your State/Province
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send
    • Select either Home User or Company
    • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When the download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Please note that none of the 26plus or minus virus were not disinfected by the panda scan is there anyway we can get rid of these?

My screen seems to be back to normal but it is white instead of blue, but fortunately has no intimidating message anymore.

Hope to hear from you soon

Thanks

C:\WINDOWS\RESTORE.INS[PSKILL.EXE]
C:\WINDOWS\system\RESTORE.INS[PSKILL.EXE]

Did you install this "PsKill" yourself?

---------------------

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ActivSurf] C:\apps\ActivSurf\4448364\Program\backweb-4448364.exe
O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports - Compare travel rates - {946B3E9E-E21A-49c8-9F63-900533FAFE14} - C:\Program Files\ShopperReports\Bin\1.0.8.0\ShprRprt.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports - Compare product prices - {E77EDA01-3C56-4a96-8D08-02B42891C169} - C:\Program Files\ShopperReports\Bin\1.0.8.0\ShprRprt.dll (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {E7DBFB6C-113A-47CF-B278-F5C6AF4DE1BD} - http://download.abacast.com/download/files/abasetup160.cab

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Download Killbox.
Click killbox.exe.
Select the option "Delete on reboot".

Now copy the next bold part:

C:\lo1610599808.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vx.tll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vxgame6.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vxgamet4.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vxh8jkdq1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernels64.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\win32.exe

Open 'file' in the killboxmenu on top and choose Paste from clipboard

Now you will see, this is pasted in the "Full Path of File to Delete"-field.
There's a little arrow (dropdown-arrow) next to that field.
If you expand it, these lines must be there together if the files are
present!

Click the button: All Files (!important!)

Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES
If you don't get that message, reboot manually.

Your computer must reboot now.

Find and delete this folder :
C:\!Killbox <= this folder

Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Run Panda's online virus scan and perform a full system scan: Panda ActiveScan

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log in your next reply.
