Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me diagnose and fix a few problems I've been having with my laptop lately. Every few days my computer will randomly get a BSoD and restart. A lot of the time it happens when I'm not even using it at the time. The most recent BSoD was:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 119
BCP1: 0000000000000001
BCP2: 000000000001588A
BCP3: 0000000000015BCF
BCP4: 0000000000015BCE
OS Version: 6_1_7600
Service Pack: 0_0
Product: 768_1

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Windows\Minidump\021612-18564-01.dmp
C:\Users\MY_NAME\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-56441-0.sysdata.xml

It started a few months ago when I tried to update my graphics driver.

Also, every once in a while (ie every week or two) my computer will freeze during start up. I usually can't use my computer outside of safe mode for a few hours and then everything suddenly starts working fine again. Once, while trying to start my computer, I got this error:
Problem Event Name: InPageCoFire
Error Status Code: c0000185
Faulting Media Type: 00000003
Damaged File Name: ExplorerFrame.dll
and the same error for dwmcore.dll

If these two problems are unrelated, I would prefer help with startup not working first as it is far more inconvenient. I'll provide any other information you need. Thank you so much to anyone who can help me.

Since this started when you updated the driver I would start there. First double check your Windows version. If it is 64 bit then you should be using a 64 bit driver. Download the latest driver for WIndows 7 of the proper bit. Then go into Programs and Features first and uninstall anything related to your graphics card. Then go into Device Manager and check that you video card is no longer listed. If it is uninstall the driver from here. Restart you PC and re-install the new driver.
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

Thank you for the response, but I can only run my computer in safe mode right now so programs and features wont uninstall anything. Also, I've already tried reinstalling the driver once or twice and it hasn't stopped the problem. I'm worried that I somehow corrupted something else entirely.

Bug Check 0x119: VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR

Ref: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff557275%28v=VS.85%29.aspx
Start Windows using Safe Mode with networking and then zip up some recent minidumps and attach the resultant .zip file to your next reply.

Please zip up the last 6 minidumps and attach to your reply so I can have a closer look. There's a chance I might get some more useful info from them.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump <<< folder
  • Click on the most recent minidump file.
  • Hold down the <Ctrl> key, and click on the 5 next-most recent minidump files to also select them.
  • Release the <Ctrl> key.
  • Now, right-click on one of the selected files > Send to ... > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
The zip file will be located in the same place (the Minidump folder).
  • Attach the zip file to your next reply.
When you click on Add Reply, you will see the facility to attach a file just below the box where you type your message.

The six minidump files that you zipped up and attached are from the time period Jan 3 to 16, 2012. I was hoping to see some of the latest ones.

Perhaps you might find it easier ... and it might even be more useful ... to use the following instructions ...

:step1: Please follow the instructions: BSOD Posting Instructions: Windows 7 - Vista

(Note: When you run BSOD_Windows7_Vista_v2.64_jcgriff2_.exe, it will also run autoruns.exe ... and both need to be in the same location!)
... with one exception in the following line:
  • "4. Zip up the entire output folder + PERFMON and attach the zip file to your next post."
The BC forums will allow a total attachment size of only 512 kb (and what you need to attach will exceed this limit). Please upload the zip file to a file sharing website of your choice and and post a link to it in this thread so that we can access your uploaded zip file. I will have a look at the contained information and see if I can shed some light on your BSOD issue.

See the suggestions in the following links for recommendations on file sharing websites:
  • http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/15-great-free-online-file-sharing-alternatives/
  • http://www.smashingapps.com/2008/08/28/5-best-free-file-hosting-services-to-store-your-files.html

:step2: Please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy, and post a link to it in this thread.
  • It is a convenient and accurate way of providing us with details of your computer specifications.
Note: I believe that you will need to have Windows running normally and not in Safe Mode with networking in order to be able to run Speccy.

:step3: Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Checkmark the following checkboxes:
    • List Installed Programs
  • Click Go.
When the scan is finished, a text file will open in a Notepad window.
  • Copy the entire contents of the Notepad window, and paste in your reply.
(Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.)

Interesting ... very interesting .... and I am still looking at the most recent dump!

While I am working on the minidumps, I would like you to test the hard drive since that may be the prime suspect here ... at this very early stage.

Test the hard drive. If you tell us the hard drive manufacturer's name (brand name) and model we can point you to the most appropriate diagnostic utility to use. It is best to use the hard drive manufacturer's own diagnostic utility, but Seagate's tool will work OK on most brands. The diagnostic tool is run from a bootable CD (Windows does not need to be working. The first two steps are done on a working computer, while the third step is to boot the ailing computer with the CD that you create in the first two steps.)

:step1: Please download SeaTools for DOS (CD) from Seagate's SeaTools for DOS web page

or use the following direct download link to download the latest version of SeaTools for DOS:
Download SeaTools for DOS ISO Image

The downloaded file name is SeaToolsDOS223ALL.ISO
:step2: Burn the downloaded .ISO image to a CD using the appropriate burning software.
  • If you do not already have a suitable burning program for writing .ISO images to disc ...
    • Download and install ImgBurn.
Ensure that you UN-check the box agreeing to install the Ask toolbar during the installation.
    • Place a new (blank) CD disc in the drive tray.
    • Choose Write image file to disc.
    • Under Source, click on the Browse button: Navigate to and select the .ISO file that you wish to burn.
    • Place a check-mark in the box beside Verify.
  • Click Posted Image

When the CD has been burned and verified as successful, it will be bootable.

:step3: Boot from the CD.
  • (You may need to access the BIOS Setup Menu or the Boot Menu and change the boot order to enable booting from CD before hard drive.)
  • From Basic tests on the Main Menu, run the Short test and then the Long test.

(The long test will take some considerable time to complete.)
The results will be shown as either a PASS or FAIL.
There is a chance that during the Long test, you may be offered the opportunity to attempt repairs on the hard drive:
  • If so, go ahead and attempt to do so, but ONLY after backing up all important personal files.
Note: You may wish to view the following ...
Please let us know the results of the tests.

When you can, include the make and model number of the problematic hard drive. If you do choose to use SeaTools, you will see the model number (and maybe the make) when SeaTools first detects the hard drive.

Manufacturer Dell Inc.
Product Name Studio 1558
Version A07

Another option to test the hard drive on your laptop would be to run the DELL diagnostics utility, which should be quite reliable also.

Edit: I have your uploaded data (mediafire.com) on my computer now. Thanks for providing all the extra info. It may yet come in handy!

It takes me a considerable time to analyse minidumps and sift through the vast amount of info provided, so it may be some time before I finish doing that and get back to you with my findings. However, as with the hard drive test, I may ask you to conduct some other tests during this time.

Sorry, could you tell me how I could go about running the DELL diagnostics utility? I don't know much about this sort of thing.

I am not personally familiar with DELL products, so I often have to google for answers ... and in this case I used the search term:
  • dell studio 1558 diagnostics utility hard drive test
Seem to be some interesting reading there among the results.

studio1558 SETUP GUIDE:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/studio1558/en/SG/sg_en.pdf

Under the heading Dell Diagnostics ... page 59:

Starting Dell Diagnostics From Your Hard Drive
The Dell Diagnostics is located on a hidden diagnostic utility partition on your hard drive.
NOTE: If your computer cannot display a screen image, contact Dell (see “Contacting Dell” on page 76).
Ensure that the computer is connected to an 1. electrical outlet that is known to be working properly.
Turn on (or restart) your computer.2.
When the DELL3. ™ logo appears, press <F12> immediately. Select Diagnostics from the boot menu and press <Enter>.
This may invoke the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA) on your computer.

NOTE: If you wait too long and the operating system logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Microsoft® Windows® desktop; then, shut down your computer and try again.NOTE: If you see a message stating that no diagnostic utility partition has been found, run the Dell Diagnostics from the Drivers and Utilities disc.
If PSA is invoked:
The PSA will start running the tests.a.
If the PSA completes successfully, the b. following message is displayed: “No problems have been found with this system so far. Do you want to run the remaining memory tests? This will take about 30 minutes or more. Do you want to continue? (Recommended).”
If you are experiencing memory issues c. press <y>, otherwise press <n>.
The following message is displayed:
“Booting Dell Diagnostic Utility Partition. Press any key to continue.”
Press any key to go to the d. Choose An Option window.
If PSA is not invoked:
Press any key to start the Dell Diagnostics from the diagnostics utility partition on your hard drive and to go to the Choose An Option window.
Select the test you want to run.4.
If a problem is encountered during a test, 5. a message appears with an error code and a description of the problem. Write down the error code and problem description and contact Dell (see “Contacting Dell” on page 76).

NOTE: The Service Tag for your computer is displayed at the top of each test screen. The Service Tag helps you identify your computer when you contact Dell.
When the tests are complete, close the test 6. screen to return to the Choose An Option window.
To exit the Dell Diagnostics and to restart the 7. computer, click Exit
