Hi there,

I have a computer that has been sending out massive amounts of spam, to the tune of 86,000 messages a day. I'm attempting to see if I can locate any malware on this machine that is causing this, but so far I have found nothing. I ran McAffee 8.0, and it said the machine was clean... I ran Adaware, and all it found were cookies... I ran Spybot, and again it only found cookies... so I turned to HijackThis on a recommendation from a peer. However, I personally still don't see anything in the log that could cause this... the only thing that looked odd was xdict.exe, which I know can sometimes be used to gain access to a computer; however, it is also part of Powerword 2003 -- which is installed on this machine -- so I don't know whether to be concerned about this or not.

I am hoping that maybe I can get some feedback on this log... if anyone sees anything that could be causing this?

Thanks for your help,
Sarah

Hello,

Let's take a look..

Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose for rename yet!
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Thanks for your reply.
I downloaded and ran Blacklight Beta in expert mode, and it found nothing.
Odd?

Hmm,

So spam is getting sent from your mailaccount as I read in here? Not getting received...
Does your antivirus notify there?
Can you perform next please?

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan
1. Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
2. A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
3. Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.
4. If running MSAS beta you may receive an alert that an IE ActiveX program requires your approval. Click "Allow"
5. When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
6. Click "Scan Settings" and check the option to use the EXTENDED DATABASE, then click "OK"
7. Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
8. When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"
9. Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply.

Extra note..

I note in your log that you have FlashGet the download manager - be aware that the trial copy bundles Cydoor adware, but when you register the Ads disappear.
To remove the program: Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove it.
