System Check will not let me get on the internet. So, I started the removal procedure, posted here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-system-check, by using a USB flash drive. The note from rkill reads that no processes were stopped. The note from tdsskiller reads it processed objects and found no threats. (The first time it found one threat and cured it, but like an idiot, I rebooted the pc because it claimed that the pc had to be rebooted to complete the cure. The note from rkill is always the same.)

Oh, upon the reboot, the pc displayed a message that system restore was not successful.

I ran Malwarebytes without closing anything and received a message that there is an error and to report it. I clicked the malwarebytes icon in the taskbar and it offered me the option of scanning, so I started the scan. The error messages disappeared. Over 100 infections were found.

Now, when it is rebooted, it loads to the blue background (not the blue screen of death) and that is all. It will boot into safe mode, but nothing else. Also, the network connection fails every time. (I know it is the background because I can ctl-alt-del and the task manager appears.)

It is a Dell Dimension 3000, 1GB RAM, 80GB hard drive, McAfee anti-virus.

Thanks in advance.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

information and logs:

  • In your next post I need the following

  • .logs from DDS
  • let me know of any problems you may have had

I will start, but I want to know one thing: can I download these items and then transfer them to the pc that needs it? The one that needs it will not allow internet connection.

My symptoms are fatigue and stress from dealing with this pc! :) (I know you meant the symptoms of the pc.)

Also, I understand the delay. When I posted, I read that it can take up to five days for a response.

Thanks.

Thanks for the link for the vaccine, but seriously, I don't want to provide all that information and I cannot access my email from this pc. (This pc is running linux and I cannot figure out how to do very much on it other than open Firefox.)

Here are the txt files:

By the way, just after dds began, mcafee popped up with a message that it stopped a trojan. It's the same trojan name it is constantly finding, so I do not know if this is significant.

I'm doing this for a friend. Thanks the Lord, I no longer have children at home who can mess with my pc. (When I did, it was password protected.)

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

It will not complete a boot. It stops at a blue screen, not the blue-screen-of-death, and will not proceed. If I press ctl-alt-del, I get the task manager. There are no icons or taskbars.

If I simply format and install, will that get rid of the virus? I will ask Marcy if there is anything on the hard drive she needs.

Yesterday, I got so frustrated with both pc's, I gave up. Today, I will do battle again.

No, I have not run explore.exe. That will be my first action.

(It took four hours of research to determine how to remove Linux from my other pc. It blocked access to my DVD drive, so I could not boot with the OEM Windows disc.)

It boots to the log in screen, but neither the mouse nor the keyboard works. The keyboard works prior to that point.

Also, the starter for the GoldWing arrived, so I installed that because I was too frustrated with the pc!

I am going to format and install XP.

For about five minutes, the Goldwing idled. Any attempt to use the throttle killed the engine. It needs a new fuel pump now.

As for the doorstop called a pc, I'm on my way to a friend's to get different serial mouse and keyboard.

:)

Hola, Gringo. Couldn't get the pc to boot past the log in screen. Using F8 to choose how to boot didn't work. The keyboard worked until the log in screen. It wouldn't boot into anything but safe mode; still freezing at the log in screen.

So, I did a last resort: format and install. Thank the Lord I purchased Recover My Files. (I bought it to check on my husband, but what I found hurt so much. Ignorace surely was bliss.) :o

So, now I am recovering her images and music.

Thanks for all the help.

ttfn
