Hi,
My son's machine was infected by a virus, possibly the System check virus, which flashed up a nasty screen, hid all his applications and redirected Google. By going into safe mode with networking I have managed to run Malwarebytes and Superantispyware which has got rid of the nasty screen. I then ran unhide which weaved it's magic and got the applications back, but the redirect still remains.

I've used rkill, which reports no processes running and tried to run TDSSKiller, but it refuses to run. I've renamed it to iexplore.exe and run from the desktop as administrator but it still refuses to execute. I can see it briefly appear in the task manager, but then it disappears.
I've run TFC too, and also reset IE to default values, all without success. There are two browsers on the machine, IE and Chrome and both are affected. I've flushed the ipconfig and checked all the settings that I can find in IE etc. all to no avail.

I realise I probably need to go back to the beginning and start all over again, but would appreciate a little help along the way.

The laptop is running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

Regards,
Marc

Hi narenxp,
I'm afraid that the aswMBR software will not load either. I've tried it in normal mode, safe mode with networking and safe mode all with the same response - nothing happens. I can see it appear in the task manager process list, but it does nothing for 30 seconds or so, and then disappears.

I have a hard disk caddie that I could, if it would help, take the hard drive out of the machine and then scan it etc. as a usb drive on my main desktop machine. I'm not sure though if that would get rid of rootkit etc.

Hi narenxp,
the FIXTDSS tool seemed to work. It ran and gave a message back saying that it had fixed MBR.

I was then able to run aswMBR which ran successfully and gave the following log:
