Hi, first time poster here.

My School/Work computer has started running abnormally slow after a lend to a family member... <_<
Seemingly every day more and more error messages appear when trying to open simple things such as windows photo viewer.
My host process Svchost.exe is using much of my computer.. not sure if this is a normal thing or not after time.
Internet is running remarkably slow and things such as my Tablet are not working properly..

A friend of mine who is a member of Bleepingcomputer had similar problems on a much older computer, requested to run combofix and
his problems were taken care of, but as you'd guess im not willing to run without assistance.

Hoping someone could try to figure out whats going on, or if necessary to run comobfix able to help me out with that.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Computer Attempter,

My name is ratman and and I will be helping you with your computer problems.

Before we begin, I would like to make a few things clear so that we can fix your problem as efficiently as possible:

  • Be sure to follow all my instructions carefully! If there is anything you don't understand, don't hesitate to ask.
  • Please do not do anything or perform other steps unless I have asked you to do so.
  • Please make sure you post all logs I ask you to, and make sure that the entire log gets posted.

====================================================================================

Please take note:
  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, I would appreciate you letting me know.
  • If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
  • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and I will guide you.

Please tell me if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
<li>If you are unable to perform the steps I have recommended please try one more time and if unsuccessful alert us of such and I will design an alternate means of obtaining the necessary information.
<li>If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
<li>Upon completing the steps below I will review your topic an do my best to resolve your issues.
<li>If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
<li>Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

I need to see some up to date information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

I also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

In your next reply, please copy/paste the contents of the following:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • GMER.Log

alright GMER.exe log is as follows.

GMER 1.0.15.15641 - http://www.gmer.net
Rootkit scan 2012-02-20 17:19:26
Windows 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1
Running: gmer.exe

---- Registry - GMER 1.0.15 ----

Reg HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BTHPORT\Parameters\Keys\207c8f310912
Reg HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\services\BTHPORT\Parameters\Keys\207c8f310912 (not active ControlSet)

---- EOF - GMER 1.0.15 ----

Also, through the command prompt, the command 'net user administrator /active:yes' has been used to enable some
more editing capabilities.

unfortunately now when trying to use command 'net user administrator /active:no'
i get the message 'system error 5 has occured'
access is denied.

and upon quizzing the last user of my computer, he tells me combofix was run around a month ago, the log was discarded and the
version of combofix was uninstalled...

should i just go buy windows and re-install ratman?

thanks

Hello Computer Attempter,

Going over your logs I noticed that you have uTorrent installed.
  • Avoid gaming sites, pirated software, cracking tools, keygens, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs.
  • They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites.
  • Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and malicious Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users.
  • The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid these types of web sites and not use any P2P applications.
It is pretty much certain that if you continue to use P2P programs, you will get infected again.
I would recommend that you uninstall uTorrent, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

====================================================================================

I'd like you to run a scan with aswMBR
Please download aswMBR to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.

====================================================================================

Please download ComboFix from here:

Link

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop.

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications including Firewalls, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • Right click on ComboFix icon Posted Image and run as admin then follow the prompts.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

====================================================================================

In your next reply, please copy/paste the contents of the following:
  • aswMBR Log
  • C:\Combofix.txt

Hi Computer Attempter,

I see from your logs you have Malwarebytes Anti Malware(MBAM) installed.

I'd like you to run a Qick Scan with MBAM and copy/paste it's log in your next reply. Please ensure MBAM's virus definitions are up to date.

Can you tell me how your machine is behaving now?

What error messages, if any, are you seeing?
regards, ratman

Hi,

im still seeing some error messages that read something like "the following error occured *** 00000006x3" when closing programs,

Can you tell me what programs you get this error with? Do you still see errors when opening files?

using the command promp im seeing certain things like "error 5 occured, access is denied"

Can you be more specific please.

and my svchost.exe is using alot of memory, not sure if thats normal or not. disk defrag might help

The amount of memory used depends on how many/which services are running at a given time. I would holp off disk defrag for the moment.

seeing the first error when closing itunes mostly. no big deal,

the second in the command prompt is when i try to enable admin capabilities using the command "net user administrator \active:yes"
probly no biggie, but id rather it not....

also programs such as photoshop are asking me for a serial number every time the program opens, even though the programs are legitimate and i have already entered my key..
Photoshop, illustrator are both things i desperately need for school and work and this is becoming very frustrating.

The ammount of cpu usage % is increasing slowly with the scvhost.exe being the culprit, what do i do when this reaches 100%?
i know alot of people complain about this but i can never get a straight answer...

thanks.

Hello Computer Attempter,

...error when closing itunes mostly. no big deal,

I don't recognise this error. This would not appear to be a malware issue. Reinstalling itunes may solve this.

using the command promp im seeing certain things like "error 5 occured, access is denied"

Can you be more specific please.

...in the command prompt is when i try to enable admin capabilities using the command "net user administrator \active:yes"
probly no biggie, but id rather it not....

This error occurs when you need elevated privilages. You would need to run the Command Prompt as an Administrator

also programs such as photoshop are asking me for a serial number every time the program opens, even though the programs are legitimate and i have already entered my key..
Photoshop, illustrator are both things i desperately need for school and work and this is becoming very frustrating.

I would suggest uninstallin/reinstalling these programs

Do you mean svchost.exe? Some information can be found here
