HI,I have a PC that will not go past desktop,it will go as far as desktop icons and they are as if someone took a stick and stirred them around when i take cursor down to bottom task bar the hour glass is there, also i only show 37 process's instead of 67 in task manager.
Safe mode will not work,i have a hunch that HD has gone bad.
A lot of these problems PC'S are usually simple and stupid, like my BSOD turned out to be the
drivers in my NVIDIA video card updated drivers and BSOD went away.
PC is a GATEWAY GT4010 MEDIA CENTER,WINXP SP3,2.2mhz

The cost of fixing it is close to what i think i can buy a new PC with WIN7,faster running
more ram and every thing being better,i do have the disk to download WINXP,but i would like to get all of the stuff i have on this PC on the WD X-TERNAL DRIVER I JUST bought,i used it to download stuff off of 2 PC'S,Sorry about long post do you think it might be worth trying
to reinstall WINXP,THANK'S

My suspicion is a Virus, however since you suspect the hard drive it can't hurt to test it. On the link below download the proper bootable diagnostics for your brand of hard drive and test it. Did you try Safe mode to see if all works OK enough that way to move files to the external drive?

I have seen that symptom and it was Malware and not hardware in each case. If the hard drive test passes then I suggest visiting our Malware removal forums at "Am I infected? What do I do?" http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum103.html
or "Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs" http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum22.html

If the hard drive fails the diagnostics then post back here. One other thought if the diagnostics offers to repair the drive be careful as that swaps in a spare sector and could cause data loss.

Good Luck
