Hello all!

Over the last week, I've been experiencing very erratic behavior from my computer. Everything got very slow, and I started getting warnings from Norton that Generic Host Processes for Win32 Services was using up all my memory. It got so bad that absolutely nothing would open for me. Crtl+Alt+Del wasn't even responding. So I started up in safe mode and ran a full virus scan, which came up clean. I also ran a full Malwarebytes scan, which came up clean as well. I started to use the utilities you guys have listed for a lot of threads similar to mine while in safe mode. Security Check had an error and wouldn't finish, then FSS had the same problem. So I stopped there. I tried to defrag, but it said I didn't need it. But I was able to run an error check. I just missed the results screen, so I'm not sure how that went. But when Windows started, it seemed like everything was okay again. The load time was about normal, and IE started up right away. I then ran the Disk Optimization program in Norton 360 and it came back with successful results. But when Windows started, I got a Windows security alert: Data Execution Prevention, To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Generic Host Process for Win32 Services.

So now my questions are: am I infected, and should I run the programs you have listed in the other threads? I'm running Windows XP home, SP3.

Hello can we do these?

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.

Hello, you have some things on here that are old and can be dangerous plus wasting space.
Some need removal and updating.

Remove these thru the Control Panel's Add/Remove.
Adobe Reader 9.5.0 (Version: 9.5.0)
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10 (Version: 1.5.0.100)
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11 (Version: 1.5.0.110)
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5 (Version: 1.5.0.50)
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 (Version: 1.5.0.60)
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9 (Version: 1.5.0.90)
Java™ 6 Update 2 (Version: 1.6.0.20)
Java™ 6 Update 26 (Version: 6.0.260)
Java™ 6 Update 7 (Version: 1.6.0.70)
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 (Version: 1.6.0.10)

There are 4 Toolbars That I would remove
AIM6 is old

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u2-windows-i586.exe (or jre-7u2-windows-x64.exe for 64-bit) to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Similarly Update to Adobe Reader X (10.1.0)
Note UN check the box so you do not install the toolbar, unless you really want it..

Free! Google Toolbar search Google from any web page, block pop-ups

Yes, install Google Toolbar - optional

You need to clear your Windows Registry, I think. The Windows registry keeps growing as long as you use your computer. Whenever you install or uninstall software, add or remove hardware, or change your computers settings, a new entry is inserted into the Windows registry. Over time, your registry will be accumulated with a large number of obsolete, redundant and invalid entries and registry holes, which make your system increasingly unstable, run more slowly and crash more frequently.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:
  • Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
  • Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.
  • Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.
  • Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.
  • The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.
