I'm in desperate need of help with an unknown infection on my laptop. I'll do my best to explain the

symptoms and details thoroughly. It's a 3 month old Toshiba laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.

It seems like a rootkit if I understand correctly. No matter what I do, after reboot, the

registry/services/security settings all change. Here is a generic timeframe with steps taken to this point.

Nov 2011-
100+ spam emails/day
NIS 2011 config changes
Windows Live uploading/sending my docs/pics/files (I have never used Win Live)
browser redirects
program that copies certificates and self validates
access denied to certain folders
wrong date/time on most files
remote reg/desktop service running after being disabled
.....
I can keep going, but I won't until it's necessary.

Fast forward to Jan 27 2012. I made a copy of the OS in media creator, and wiped the C drive out. Big waste of

time evidentally. Nothing is different, except the programs and files that I installed are gone. Since the DVD's were made post-infection, I'm guessing it hitched a ride. I've tried everything I know to, and some I didn't. I don't have data that I'm trying to preserve. My only goal is to clean the slate, tighten security, and learn from my mistakes (browsing while logged in as Admin and Java running wild) and if possible, find the name/type of infection.

It looks like possible TDL rootkit.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

NOTE. When posting there include also aswMBR and ListParts by Farbar logs.
