System: Win XP Service Pack 3
Browser: Firefox

Hello! Several days ago I noticed that my computer had been infected with a rootkit (possibly a variant of the vipsearchs.net virus based on the fact that Google search results were redirecting via vipsearchs.net, although no one has confirmed this for me yet).

I posted immediately in the 'Am I Infected? What Do I Do?' forum (see topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic441876.html) and Broni has been helping me download and run various diagnostic/scanning tools on the infected machine over the past several days.

Here is a recap of my initial symptoms:

"Today around noon (it is now around 3pm where I am) I noticed in Windows Task Manager that a system process called SVCHOST had skyrocketed to over 400,000k memory usage (normally this hovers around 30,000k on my machine). About the same time, I got a system tray prompt that my antivirus software (Avira AntiVir Personal) was out of date and that a newer version was available. Thinking that the SVCHOST process's sudden jump in memory usage might have had something to do with the system tray prompt, I logged out of my account and back in.... This didn't help at all; SVCHOST has risen even more - to around 900,000k (which is absurd!) - I'm afraid it's going to cripple my machine if it keeps rising. I also can't use Google - clicking on search results redirects me to random websites, and the address that pops up temporarily in the navigation field is something like "vipsearchs". I'm typing this post on another computer because I can't get to any computer help forums on the affected machine.

UPDATE 1: I'm also unable to print from the machine in question using the text editor Notepad++. Never had that problem before either...fearing I have something nasty...

UPDATE 2: My virus scanner logs say that a piece of Malware was detected earlier today in C > WINDOWS > TEMP > etc... Under Action Taken it says "Allow access" (as opposed to quarantine, delete, etc.)."

Under Broni's instructions I have successfully downloaded and run the following programs, and have reset my "hosts" file via a Microsoft KB article:

Security Check
FSS
MiniToolBox
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
aswMBR
TDSSKiller

Please refer to topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic441876.html to see the relevant logs.

I have also completed the steps in this guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html) beginning at step 6, and was able to generate all of the requested logs (please see below).

The most recent update on my computer's behavior is as follows:

"After a restart, my network connection works for about an hour - then it stops working and I get a message "Windows cannot configure this wireless
connection...etc." I tried cycling my modem and router, but it didn't solve this problem.

While I had a working connection, I started Firefox and tried opening/performing searches with a few websites. Ebay, Amazon, Mapquest, and IMDB all opened and worked fine. I couldn't access Google, Bing, or Craigslist, however (no connection could be established with their servers).

All processes look fairly normal in Windows Task Manager (i.e., nothing is taking up more memory than it should). 'mbamservice' is still running and is taking up about 90,000k..."

Addendum: after resetting my hosts file, I no longer have even a brief network connection after a restart.

Here is my DDS.txt log:

When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hello Gringo and thank you for your help.

I have read your instructions thoroughly and will be keeping a close eye on this thread.

I have two questions for you before I attempt to run Combofix:

1) At some point (as soon as it is safe to do so), I would like to run my backup software so the most important data on the infected machine is protected... I haven't run it yet because I was afraid the rootkit on my machine would interfere with the process in some way or copy itself onto the external hard drive where I store my backups. With that being said, I would like to run it before we attempt to run anything that might cause problems with the machine's ability to boot up or my ability to use the Windows GUI. Would now a good time to run it?

2) My security suite includes Avira AntiVir Personal, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and Windows Firewall. Do I need to disable all three of these before I run Combofix, or just Avira AntiVir?

Thanks again :)

Damaru

Yes run it now and then after a few more scans I would run it again

Okay, my data backup is in progress....I will reply again as soon as it finishes and I've been able to generate my Combofix log (hopefully later tonight).

Okay, finished my data backup and generated my first ComboFix log (see below).

During the scan, the program requested that I install/update the Recovery Console - however, as I had no network connection on the infected machine at the time of the scan, this operation failed...I was then given a message that ComboFix would continue to scan, but would not attempt to fix problems related to some serious infections.

ComboFix completed stages 1-50 without apparent problems (although after Stage_2, I noticed that the explorer.exe process was killed and relaunched). ComboFix then began deleting files. After 5 or so files, explorer.exe was killed again, leaving only my background and the ComboFix window on the screen. Nothing further happened for over 5 minutes, leading me to think that ComboFix may have stalled at this stage, but eventually the Windows XP GUI and a ComboFix log reappeared on my screen.

After the ComboFix scan was done, I decided to restart my computer to see if I had a working network connection. The boot process took about 15 seconds longer than normal, and I now have a network connection - those are the two major differences I notice since before running ComboFix. I've also turned my security suite back on for the moment.

One other peculiarity: after the restart, the "Website Blocking" option on the right-click menu of Malwarebytes is no longer checked, and even if I click it, it remains un-checked. I'm 95% sure this option was checked prior to the restart.

Here is the relevant ComboFix log:

Okay, done. :)

I had no problems with the TDSSKiller scan.

aswMBR failed to download new Avast definitions prior to the scan as my network connection was down at the time (I can try to get a connection and run a new aswMBR scan if the Avast update is important). Also, I got an error message during the aswMBR scan asking for the disk to be inserted into drive D: I think this happens with aswMBR because I originally installed the program onto the infected machine from a disk rather than the internet. However, after I clicked 'continue' through the error message a few times, the scan ran to completion.

Here are the TDSSKiller and aswMBR logs:

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Okay, done. :)

I dragged the CFScript icon onto the ComboFix icon and this re-launched ComboFix ~

Right away I saw an unusual error: "iexplore.exe has encountered an error and needs to close". This was odd because I don't normally use IE and didn't have an instance of it open at the time. Around the same time, a new Internet Explorer icon appeared on my desktop.

During this ComboFix scan, I was able to download/update the Recovery Console, as I had a working network connection. :]

The scan looked pretty much the same as the first scan; explorer.exe appeared to close and re-launch around Stage_2, all 50 stages were completed, several files were deleted towards the end, and explorer.exe appeared to close and re-launch again just before the log appeared.

I wasn't required to restart at the end of the scan, so I haven't.

My computer is behaving fairly normally (though my connection with certain web-servers is somewhat spotty). After the scan, I opened Firefox and tried opening/performing searches with a few websites. Amazon worked perfectly on the first try. Craigslist, Bing, and IMDB all worked, but it took me multiple refreshes to get a connection with their servers. Ebay wouldn't work for me at all.

Here is the new ComboFix log:

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidentally close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

If you have any problems running Hijackthis see NOTE** below (Host file not read, blank notepad ...)

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer

Okay, I removed Frostwire and Java 6 Update 22, successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache, and installed Java.

I had a problem when I ran Temp File Cleaner - the program seems to have frozen on the step "Stopping running processes". The instructions say it should only take a few minutes, but it's been sitting there for over an hour and hasn't restored my desktop.

I notice that just before the program froze, Malwarebytes tried to pop up a window (I infer this from the fact that there is a new Malwarebytes taskbar button on my taskbar, but no Malwarebytes window on my screen).

Should I disable MBAM and try running TFC again?

Hi Gringo,

Okay, I've got the logs. :)

No malicious items were detected in either the quick or full MbAM scans, and I had no problems running HiJackThis.

My computer seems to be behaving very well at the moment, aside from 2 items: 1) after a restart, there is a lot of distortion coming out of my speakers when the Windows log-on sound plays. My sound appears to be completely normal in other respects. 2) I'm having some very slow network connection speeds tonight (in the 5.5 - 11 Mbps range, where 54Mbps is normal for me). I'm still having to refresh several times to get certain webpages to load, but I'm wondering if this may just be a result of my slower-than-usual network connection speed?

Here are the MbAM and HiJackThis logs:
