My son is having trouble on a TWO computers, this being the first of the two [I will only post regarding this first one for now]

Computer info:
HP Desktop with Core2 Duo 6400 @ 2.1 GHz
with an nVidia graphics card
running WinXP SvPack3

He uses it for things like
iTunes
Facebook
YouTube
Web-based games like League of Legends and Starcraft
Surfing
AdobePremier

To avoid infected computer issues and keep up with friends on Facebook, he migrated to another computer that dual boots into either WinXP or Linux UbuntuStudio for digital audio recording,
but now the WinXP side of that computer seems infected too.
[NOTE: I will NOT post any requests or DDS logs for THAT SECOND computer until this one is resolved, to avoid confusion, both for the sake of anyone offering help, and for my own sake.]

SYMPTOMS include
- Google search redirect to what seems to be exclusive ad-related sites
- Trouble installing anti-virus programs (message about Administrator config not to allow install)
- Very slow computer with lots of Svchost activity, which my son claims he fixes thru Cntrl-Alt-Del and terminate those, which he claims are slowing system down. [son is SURE Svchost is the source of the problem;
I'm not so sure; perhaps other virus triggers lots of Svchost activity?]
- When I log in as administrator, I seem to have lost all entries under Programs - Accessories - System Tools
- The DDS log ends with "Warning: possible TDL3 rootkit infection !"

PAST FIX ATTEMPTS: Have run these on numerous occasions:
- Malwarebytes Antimalware - often
- AVG Antivirus - boots with this on
- Spywareblaster - sometimes
- Other various free anti-spyware programs via CNET download
- Also tried Hijackthis (recently it won't install right away until after repeated attempts and renaming file)
- Reformat hard drive and reinstall software:
We have reformatted the HD on this computer a few times and reinstalled all software. Things are fine for a while, but problems keep coming back.

I tell my son it may be his surfing habits and gaming or links via FaceBook.
He claims it's something ON the computer that was not erased in the reformats, and I guess I've heard this is possible, but it would seem less likely than his surfing habits.

I also have a Hihackjthis log, but as your prep guide recommends DDS (etc.), I have followed those instructions.

Below is the DDS log:

I should add that Malwarebytes Antimalware and AVGAntivirus turned up no infections. But something is obviously wrong.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.

  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had

I had a little trouble with the reboots--
Ad-Aware doesn't stay disabled after reboot,
and AVG-Antivirus only has a max temporary disable of 15 minutes,
so I uninstalled both and ran Combofix again.
Then it worked fine.
Log will follow.

As I said in previous message, I ended up uninstalling Ad-Aware and AVG because it was interfering after the Combofix Reboot, and running ComboFix once was not enough--it needed the reboots to complete the work.

Here's the ComboFix log report:

For some reason, after ComboFix, I had to start the internet connection manually (clicking Netgear program from desktop), but it seems to be working. Web searches (and searches for virus removal assistance) are no longer resulting in redirects to ad sites.

Greetings

I want you to run these next,

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Please download aswMBR to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • it will ask to download extra definitions - ALLOW IT
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.

If you have any problems running either one come back and let me know

please reply with the reports from TDSSKiller and aswMBR

Thanks for your help so far, Gringo. It seemed fixed until today, when now the google redirect is showing symptoms again.

I'll give your new instructions a try.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Thanks, Gringo. Here's what happened:

1. Combofix found the same Rootkit Zero Access infection
(same as first time I ran Rootkit before TDSSKiller)
and said, again, that it's very hard to fix.

2. It asked for a reboot.

3. After reboot, it went through many stages and produced a log.

4. The FIRST time I ran combofix, it broke the link between the desktop FireFox icon and the program,
so when prompted, I found the program in the Program Files folder so it could re-link the icon
to the program. I did not mention that before.

5. THIS time, Firefox would not work at all, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it again.
It might be that the rootkit infection was linked somehow to Firefox,
because that's the browser we usually use,
so when the infected files were deleted,
it affected the performance of Firefox.
I don't want the same to happen to IE, the only remaining browser on this computer,
so I'm downloading Firefox again.

QUESTION: Would it be a good idea to quarantine this computer between steps
(COmbofix - TDSSKiller - etc)
Rather than let my son keep surfing and playing games on it --
which might be bringing the infection back
before all these steps are competed?

Here's the log from this time on Combofix:

New problems:
Firefox uninstall seemed to succeed
and so did Firefox download,
but upon starting up the new install of Firefox,
it claims the proxy server settings are not right,
so Firefox does not work,
but IE works -- a little.

IE is having problems too:
I can get to bleeping computer by typing in www.bleeping.... into the address bar,
but when I try a google search,
after I type one letter into the google search box,
IE closes unexpectedly.

Does this mean that critical files were infected and removed,
making IE unstable
and the New Firefox unusable?

I removed the proxy settings for Firefox under tools - advanced
and now Firefox is working again. For now.

Greetings

Would it be a good idea to quarantine this computer between steps
(COmbofix - TDSSKiller - etc)
Rather than let my son keep surfing and playing games on it --

might be a good idea - those settings in Firefox were not there last time

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

KillAll::

File::
c:\program files\Internet Explorer\17E.exe

Folder::
C:\program files\794F6
C:\AC079

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:49636

FireFox::
FF - ProfilePath - c:\documents and settings\Paul\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\6lklh6tv.default\
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http - 127.0.0.1
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http_port - 49636
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.type - 1
