System: Compaq Presario SR5023WM (desktop), Athelon AMD 64. Installing Vista Home Premium 32bit (it's the only disk I can find).

I had a rootkit virus and other issues that were best fixed by a reformat/reinstall. Did the reformat from C prompt. I put the Vista CD in the drive and booted from it. I got through the preliminaries (custom install) and finally get to "Where do you want to install Windows?" I choose partition 1 (the reformatted one) and click next. It says "Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation." It wants me to load a driver. I went to the Compaq website (on my laptop) and downloaded the hard drive driver on a jump drive. The Vista install couldn't find the driver. I tried again on a CD, still no joy. Now I'm stuck. I know the computer has the system requirements to use Vista, because it came installed with Vista. What gives? Am I missing a driver? or do I have to use 64-bit?

Unplug any memory sticks, printers etc from the USB ports. Check the card reader (if installed) for inserted media.
If the computer has a card reader built-in you might have to unplug it too.

You cannot select or format a hard disk partition when you try to install Windows Vista
