Depending on which reference you use, here it can be pronounced either way.

Although the inventors tended to use a "j," GIF with a hard "g" serves to preserve the word origins (from graphic), and distinguishes it from a popular brand of peanut butter---"Choosy programmers choose GIF."

I've always pronounced it "Jiff", but i understand where the "Giph" pronounciation is coming from. The hard "G" does match with the "graphical" part of the full name.....

Idk, i just leave it up to personal preference. I'm not in a situation where i have to say the word to someone else anyway....

Why would you need to distinguish it from a band of peanut butter?

In what situation would this problem occur? That eexcuse to me, is completely idiotic.

I do understand, however, the use of a hard G is because of the first word: "Graphical".

The thing is though; why change what the original creator has made? He may not of been all too smart in the head when it came to ggrammar but it was still originally "Jiff".

PS: GIF was invented in the same year that I was born! :flowers:

At a computer class, White is working with graphics and asks for help from his teacher, Green. Green comes over to the confused student and says, "I'll fix your jif in a jif."

Mr. White's car squeeks, does he take to a GIFFY LUBE?

My point is this: why pronounce a word in such a way that it can lead to confusion, when there is an alternate pronounciation that does not, and serves to reinforce the derivation?

The originators might be very clever at computer stuff, but certainly didn't think about the consequences to the language of their curious pronounciation of their invention. Once a "word" is created, it becomes public domain, as it were, and usage will out. This can apply to pronounciation as well as meaning. From what I understand, the hard "g" pronounciation is winning out.

Regards,
John
