I'm not sure what the problem is with my computer. First off, I have 2 computers (a laptop and a desktop) and I'll start with the desktop.

I'm not sure how to describe the problem...basically it has gotten pretty slow. I think perhaps my 14 year old has downloaded something with spyware in it, but I have no idea what.
What's the first thing I need to do to determine what the problem is? I have avast antivirus program...is there something else I should have in addition to that to protect my computer?
Can someone guide me?

TIA!
ReneeG

Update Adobe Flash Player
Download the Latest Adobe Flash for Firefox and IE Without Any Extras: http://www.404techsupport.com/2010/04/27/download-the-latest-adobe-flash-for-firefox-and-ie-without-any-extras/

1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Do NOT post JavaRa log.

You should be good to go :)

Again, my apologies for my time lapse. :)

I do think all the help you've given me has helped, and I greatly appreciate the help! But the computer seems to still be running slowly. Is there anything else I can do to make it function a little faster?

Again, thank you for the help so far! I did find a couple of infections that I probably would never have known about otherwise!

Running pretty much anything is slow...I notice it mostly when loading pages, you have to pretty much wait until the page is loaded before you can scroll up or down.
That doesn't happen on my laptop...it runs smoothly, and I guess that's what I'm saying...it doesn't run *smoothly*, if that makes sense. I'm pretty sure it's not my internet connection if I don't experience it on my laptop?

So, we're talking about slow browser here?
If so, which one?

I use Google Chrome, but on both computers, and the computer in question is the one that's being slow. Guess maybe it's something I'm going to have to live with?

I'm sorry...it's been so crazy around here with all the fire/rescue training my husband and I have been involved with lately, and now that it's warming up, it's only going to get busier!

After not using the desktop for a few days (I've only used the laptop the last week or so), I finally found time to get on the desktop today and, my bad, it appears to be running much better since following all of your instructions. I did check on IE and it seems to do fine as well.
I do appreciate your help greatly, and your patience with me! Thank you so much!

Renee
