Referred from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic441226.html ~ OB

Hello,

Thank you in advance for any help that I may receive.

I've problems with my computer for around a week, this is when a McAfee scan I ran detected 2 trojans and removed them.

Then the problems started:

My computer was unable to start.
The display was flashing red & green lines.
Nvidia display driver stoped working before and after scan.
My computer kept on asking to do Startup repair, which can't find the solution.
It recommended contacting manufacturer.
I received BSOD with nvidia display driver file as cause.

I didn't have an antivirus installed for around 30 days prior to this. I believe firewall is on, but have a Bittorrent installed.

I managed to run a ESET scan, and I posted the log to an 'Am I infected? What do I do?' forum, where I received some help from Boopme.

boopme got me to run;
- MiniToolBox
- RKill
- SuperAntiSpyware (removed 366 threats, including trojens)
- Malwarebytes anti-malware (removed 2 trojens)

I posted all the logs to boopme (can provide them if you need), and also told him I had trouble accessing Safemode for one of the scans.

He then instructed me to try "Repair broken SafeBoot key" on SuperAntiSpyware, which didn't appear to be on my version, and then got me to try SafeBootKeyRepair.exe, which also didn't work.

I was then told to post my problems on here.

I have then had further problems since attempting to run the GMER scan. Firstl I had the BSOD (didn't catch the cause), and then after restarting had the red and green lines return to my screen, and was unable to get get to the login stage, or into safemode. After several restarts I got back into desktop, but couldn't finish the GMER scan without it the scasn crashing. As I was about to post onto this forum without GMER scan my computer frose with green lines all over the screen. I emergency stopped the computer, then somehow got into safe mode, and have been able to post this.

Hope there is still some hope for my laptop, the DDS log is copied in below.

Regards

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system. [/b]
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi there, thank you very much for your reply, and I do indeed still need help.

I'm afraid my computer had trouble starting (red boxes and green lines take over the start up screens). However after an emergency shutdown, and then restart was able to boot up in safe mode.

I'v managed to run the scan in safe mode, is that sufficient of do I need to do it in normal mode?

The results are below.

Regards

Hi,

your descriptions sounds more like there's a problem with your graphic card driver than with malware. have you explored this possibility at all?

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

I'm afraid i'm pretty poor with computers, so didn't know where to start myself.

I just tried running the scan, and it stopped working on file '\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1'.

Also, I forgot to mention earlier I don't have my Windows CD that came with the laptop, it could well be lost.

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks

Hi,

in gmer please uncheck devices and check if the scan will complete then.

We will check if there's more active malware on your PC and if there isn't I'll refer you to the Windows forum where people should be able to help you out if this is a driver issue.

regards myrti

Hi Myrti,

GMER scan crashed & got BSOD.

Now even after emergency shutdown via power button, can no longer enter safe mode or desktop.
Windows Vista disc isn't availiable

However:
1) a windows 7 ultimate 32 bit disc is avail
2) Linux enviroment (xPud on CD is avail) from the Malware study hall junior (mentioned in AII log)
3) can enter system recovery options (via startup repair). An option to do a factory reset using Sony's VAIO tool is availiable also.

I got a FRST scan below via command prompt incase that helps:

Scan result of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST written by farbar) Version: 28-01-2012
Ran by SYSTEM at 2012-02-06 22:32:02

Hi,

you come well prepared! :)

Before we do anything I would like you to try startup repair and see if that gets the PC back up booting or did you already try that?

regards myrti

Hi Myrti,

Startup repair has always failed
By restating within the system recovery options, weirdly laptop booted normally!
I decided uninstall nvidia graphics driver & now my monitor is back working fingers crossed.

Problems:
cannot uninstall AVG 2012 or Norton 360 - I click on the entries for them in programs & features and they do not uninstall after uninstall button is clicked.

DDS log is below & attach.txt, as suggested by malware junior:

Hi,

do you want to unisntall both or just one? I would recommend only removing one.

Norton offers a removal tool here: https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home
AVG offers theirs here: http://www.avg.com/ww-en/utilities

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

Hello,

Hopefully have made a little progress.

After uninstalling Nvidia graphics driver I have been able to restart ok into desktop (although I still get green lines and red boxes in the start up screens, and unable to start in safemode tapping f8).

I have also uninstalled AVG 2012.

I tried re-scanning GMER offline, with devices unchecked, and it managed to finish. The log is below.

Hi,

I would recommend you try reposting in the hardware section, it may be that your graphic card is faulty or that the drivers are buggy and you need to switch drivers. This, however, is an area where I know little and I believe the people in the hardware section are better suited to help you.

I'm not seeing any active malware and the green lines/boxes are not a typical sign for malware but rather for a graphic card issue.

Ok, thank you very much for your help nonetheless!!

Before I end this post however, do you know of a way to mend the safebhoot problem I am having (unable to boot in safe mode tapping f8).

Thank you very much for your time

Hi,

it seems as if your keyboard may not be supported that early in the boot. Do you have a usb-keyboard? Did F8 not open or could you not select the safe-mode by hitting enter once the menu had opened?

Hello,

F8 didn't open the menu, so don't get the option to select safe mode. I don't have a USB keyboard :s. I'll just start a forum on the hardware section, and see if that is the problem.

Thank you very much for your help over the last few days,

Regards
