We have a laptop that we would like to become the family lap top for upstairs so we can supervise what the children are using the computer for and when. It is an older laptop that we haven't even turned on, until now, in about a year. I'm pretty sure there are viruses on it b/c it looks like the anti-virus program is out of date. It also brings up an error message when it boots up that says "RUNDLL Error loading C:\WINDOWS\Ixahurupohof.dill The specified module could not be found"
This was my fiance's "work" computer before we were together. He does admit to visiting some XXX sites and it has some virus that he tried to remove himself and then it started to slow down more and more and different error messages come up when he was starting up the computer. Eventually he just stopped using it out of frustration and used the desktop instead.
I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help with this one or not, but I thought it was worth a try! If we can fix it, it saves us lots of $$ getting a new one!
Thank you in advance for your help!!!!

Hello Maggie and welcome, I think we can get it in shape. I take it it's XP.

Its not unusual to receive such an error after using specialized fix tools.

A "Cannot find...", "Could not run...", "Error loading... or "specific module could not be found" message is usually related to malware that was set to run at startup but has been deleted. Windows is trying to load this file but cannot locate it since the file was mostly likely removed during an anti-virus or anti-malware scan. However, an associated orphaned registry entry remains and is telling Windows to load the file when you boot up. Since the file no longer exists, Windows will display an error message. You need to remove this registry entry so Windows stops searching for the file when it loads.

To resolve this, download Autoruns search for the related entry and then delete it.

Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click here if you're not sure how to do this.)
Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.
Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries.
When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.
Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.
Right-click on the entry and choose delete. -->>Ixahurupohof.dill
Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Download Link 1 <<<== Use this one first.

Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

The Autoruns link does not work it comes up saying "we are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found"

I will continue down your list though! :) Also i found a program on the computer called PC Tools SpyWare Doctor - i ran that - if found 118 infected files and 11 different viruses. it says it has deleted all the infections...i did that before i found your response on here.

OK that fine it is gone.
We still need to run one more as this is a small hard drive and not really enough RAM.
We need to update things (Windows and Apps) and remove others that are malware risks. If we don't te installs can go wrong.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.

All of these should be removed
Click on Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs
Reboot when all are removed.
Then istall from the links provided
b]NOTE:[/b] when installing updates you may want to UN check the box that installs a free tool bar.

I am running ESET now. It has been running since 9:45pm last night and is only at 30% ... we could be a while. I'm going to try to delete some of those other things in the meantime if it will let me. :)

Hi Maggie
We probably need to clear yourbrowser's cache, cookies, and history for the links to work.

Adobe Flash Player.
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

Adobe Reader
http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Java
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

EDIT:It will probably take a while.

You may want to reboot after one or two so the registry can adjust faster.

Ok. I shut the computer down, and rebooted it. It now let me download those 3 programs (Adobe flashplayer, Adobe Readers, Java). However, Now Internet Explorer has a popup bar that says "Internet Explorer is currently running with add-ons disabled"

The Windows Update will not let me do an update. It is saying it needs Active X to run it's site. But there is no popup bar for me to right click and allow it. I'm going to restart the computer one more time and see if that works.

Also, I want to make sure we don't forget to put an updated antivirus program (preferable free) on the computer. I'm sure you didn't forget, but i would have if i didn't mention it.

Thank you for your patience with this slow computer and my lack of knowledge.

After the restart. IE still says "Internet Explorer is currently running with add-ons disabled"
I tried the Windows update again. It asks for an Express update or a Custom update. Those are my only options. I clicked the Express one. Then it goes to "checking for the latest updates for your computer" and then after a while the screen changes and says "[Error number: 0x8024402F] The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
