http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic439140.html :deleted ~ Animal

Hi,

Windows 7 on HP Laptop

Got infected with what looks like it may be Win32/Cryptor(?) variant - AVG and ESET online scanners reporting additional infections as well.

Timeline:

Was browsing online a usual, may have accidentally clicked on something - and briefly saw the Java window open - then Firefox crashed and I got a big fake error message regarding "System Failure" with multiple weird dialogs.

Tried to reopen Firefox and IE and neither would load - then also noticed massive CPU use but nothing unusual in Task Manager. Restarted in Safe Mode but browsers still wouldn't run.

I then reverted to an older Restore Point thinking that might fix it. It didn't.

Ran AVG Scan it found Win32/Cryptor and some other dodgy listings as well - quarantined what it could but couldn't get all.

Then I used another more obscure browser (RockMelt) which seems to still run and downloaded ESET online scanner - it also found a few variants, etc but couldn't kill all and didn't generate a log either.

Now AVG is warning on Trojan Horse VBCrypt.EBV in C:\Windows\Temp\tjgbcw\setup.exe

Symptoms:

Browsers (Firefox/IE/Chrome) won't open, PC very slow, networking seems alright but no browsers (other than RockMelt)

Was planning on posting logs, but can't seem to run dds.scr either - the terminal window shows its scanning but then no logs are generated and the PC crashes.

Assistance much appreciated.

Thanks,

Solomonte

Hi,

Thanks for the assistance.

I followed instructions as posted:

Security Check wouldnt save a log - it ran and said completed, etyc but no log file was generated - attempted twice to no avail.

Farbar Security Scanner ran, but then got the following Dialog error:

nslookup.exe - Ordinal Not found

The ordinal 1108 could not be located in the dynamic link library WSOCK32.dll

Hi,

CORRECTION Actually THESE are the Rootkit Remover logs:

Bootkit Remover
© 2009 Esage Lab
www.esagelab.com

Program version: 1.2.0.1
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601)
, 32-bit

System volume is \\.\C:
\\.\C: -> \\.\PhysicalDrive0 at offset 0x00000000`06500000

Size Device Name MBR Status
--------------------------------------------
465 GB \\.\PhysicalDrive0 Controlled by rootkit!

Boot code on some of your physical disks is hidden by a rootkit.
To disinfect the master boot sector, use the following command:
remover.exe fix <device_name>
To inspect the boot code manually, dump the master boot sector:
remover.exe dump <device_name> [output_file]

Done;
Press any key to quit...

We have the newest TDL rootkit there.
Advanced help will be needed.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

Please post ListParts by Farbar log as well so they know what's going on.

Malware topic here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic441065.html

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MR Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who haven't got it.
