I was running a program and when i got ack to the main screen all my documents in the "My Documents" folder were gone, not the folders the were in, but just the files. How can i get them back?

Then your in luck! Do you have system restore on? You could restore to a earlier time like it never happened! Go to start/programs/accessories/system tools and system restore.
Restore your pc to a date not to far back but just before it happened. There will be a calendar there for your ease of use.
Give it a try and tell me what happenes!
Thanks CGM3

What did it say? Did it even try to run? Ok if not lets try something else. You said you were running something when it happened what was it?
Have you restarted since it happened?

See if there is an Create a Restore Point option. But I have to tell you, I lost all my docs and pics. a while back. And I do not think that System Restore will get them back. It did not for me anyway. But to be clear. I have ME so I'm not sure if it applies to XP. I do feel your pain though.

Ciao, Scarlett

to cgm: it didnt say anything except that it would restore my computer to oct. 23, it didnt though. i was running gta: vice city, and even the saved game files for it were gone wen i came back. i restarted a few times becuase the system restore has to and because i had to shut it down for the night

to scarlett: there was an option to create system restore point, but that did nothing but thanks for trying.

also can i get a file saver program, if anyone knows of a free, not trial but completely free version of one?

Could something in the program you were running cause these files to become "hidden"? You might want to try to do a seach through My Documenents for a file whose name you can remember, being sure to search through hidden files. If you had documents in sub-folders and the sub-folders have not disappeared, it might have something to do with the associations for these files being changed.

System restore will not effect data files one way or the other.
Cheers,
John

Do you use a third-party delete program, one other then the recycle bin?

If you know the exact filename, you may be able to do a registry search for it. Click START->run->type in regedit->click OK. On the registry editor, click Edit->Find (or press CTRL+F). Type in the name of the file, without the extention Ex:F1_MusicPak.vpl you would type in F1_MusicPak. MAKE SURE YOU EXIT REGISTRY EDITOR WITHOUT SAVING!!

Have you tried the advanced search options? On the search results page, click all files and folders, and click the chevron near more advanced options. Put a checkmark next to all of the checkboxes, except search tape backup. You may notice that there was a few that was blank before. Try your search again with these options enabled.

well, i found out what really happened, my sister downloaded eDonkey onto my computer  , and she didnt want to share any of my files and she deleted them through eDonkey, she didnt think that had anything to do with me losing my files so she kept it a secret. anways she delted eDOnkey completely off of my computer and i cant find a trace of it. anyone know what to do now, other than put a password on my computer?

Thanks for apprising us of what really happened.

I'd password protect the system.

I'd also go into the system restore function and increase the usable restore space.
It appears to me that you may only have a small amount of space designated for this function. I use 12% (about 68mb). This gives me several restore points per week back about 3 1/2 months.

Sorry you've lost all your files. I don't think there's any way to recover them now.

regards,
~Koan
