Hello folks!

I'm a bit new around here, so bear with me.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on a semi-public Dell Inspiron 5305 desktop (church office computer).

Last week (Thursday, the last time I was in the office), I started getting the persistent error message, "Winrscmde has stopped working". Any time I closed the box, it reappeared a few seconds later. I did not notice any performance issues, but Googling told me that other people had experienced problems after seeing the same error.

I ran MalwareBytes - my old standby - which did locate and remove two objects that it listed as Trojans. After this, and after a restart, the Winrscmde error continued to appear. I lurked through forums for advice, then went ahead and downloaded ComboFix.

Fast forward to today (Monday). I get back to the office and the computer has been left on with various files open that I had been using last week. The Winrscmde error message was still onscreen, so I decided to close all programs, disable my antivirus, and run ComboFix. I figured that I was savvy enough to at least let the thing do its job and I could report here with results if need be. Before I took the plunge and ran CF, I rebooted, just to start from a clean slate (machine was running sluggishly after having like three Firefox windows open all weekend).

Two strange things at this point. First of all, after this reboot, I no longer see the Winrscmde error. Technically, that is the end of my problem, but I've been doing this long enough to get nervous when an error message up and disappears.

Secondly, when I tried to install ComboFix, it got about 2/3 through the install process, then the machine BlueScreened. I remember seeing on the action list that CF stopped saying "Extract" and did two rounds of "Output folder etc..." before the BlueScreen hit, if that helps. I waited for the reboot, then tried again. Same results, same place. Here is the BlueScreen error report:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: a
BCP1: 000000000000002A
BCP2: 000000000000000C
BCP3: 0000000000000000
BCP4: FFFFF80001E703B3
OS Version: 6_0_6001
Service Pack: 1_0
Product: 768_1

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini013012-01.dmp
C:\Users\church\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-65723-0.sysdata.xml
C:\Users\church\AppData\Local\Temp\WER2D75.tmp.version.txt

So, I guess, my questions are these:

1) Do I still need to be concerned, or should I not worry about the Winrscmde error now that it's disappeared?
2) Should I be concerned that ComboFix refuses to even install?

Thanks folks, and I hope you can help! I'm the only tech-savvy person in this church, so it's a lot on my shoulders when the computer fritzes out.

EDIT: As I was about to click "Post", the Winrscmde error has returned! Plzhelpkthx!

This is probably a rootkit

Download

TDSSkiller

Launch it.Click on change parameters-Select TDLFS file system

Click on "Scan".Please post the LOG report

Please download GMER from here(doesnot work on 64 bit OS)

http://www2.gmer.net/download.php

Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.

GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic Full Scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)

If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.

Download

aswMBR

Launch it, allow it to download latest Avast! virus definitions
Click the "Scan" button to start scan. After scan finishes, click on Save log

Post the log results here

NOTE:COMBOFIX logs will not be analyzed here

Sorry my reply took so long. It's been busy this last month or so.

This is probably a rootkit

Download

TDSSkiller

Launch it.Click on change parameters-Select TDLFS file system

Click on "Scan".Please post the LOG report

I ran TDSSKiller. Didn't see a log, per se, but here's what it says. I didn't quarantine anything.

Event Object
Infected \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 (Rootkit.Boot.Pihar.B)
Suspicious \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System)

I "skipped" both of these until further instruction.

Please download GMER from here(doesnot work on 64 bit OS)

http://www2.gmer.net/download.php

Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.

I have a 64-bit OS. Should've mentioned that before. Is there any alternative that you know of?

Download

aswMBR

Launch it, allow it to download latest Avast! virus definitions
Click the "Scan" button to start scan. After scan finishes, click on Save log

Post the log results here

Waiting for your response on the other two to try this.

Launch TDSSkiller and SCAN

Rootkit.boot.pihar-CURE it

TDSSfilesystem-DELETE it

Restart the PC

SKIP GMER

Run aswmbr and post the log here

Post the TDSSkiller log too

Howdy!

I've finally gotten around to trying what you suggested.

Copied to quarantine by TDSSKiller:
Device\Harddisk0\DR0\TDLFS\ ph.dll
phx.dll
phd
phdx
phx
phdata
phld
phln
phlx
phm

TDSSKiller also deleted \Device\Harddisk0\DR0\TDLFS

Hey there--

I ran MBAM once, and it found and fixed svchost.exe, which I had been suspecting was part of the problem. I rebooted and ran MBAM again. Clean bill o' health.

ESET results:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM\9D07.tmp Win64/Olmarik.AD trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM\9D08.tmp Win64/Olmarik.AD trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Users\church\Downloads\cnet2_FotoSketcher_exe.exe a variant of Win32/InstallCore.D application cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Users\church\Downloads\cnet2_Pazera_Free_MP4_to_AVI_Converter_exe.exe a variant of Win32/InstallCore.D application cleaned by deleting - quarantined

I then selected the option to delete quarantined files.

I don't really know how to read the minitoolbox logs, but everyting else seems to have been effective. Any other suggestions before we call this closed?
