My desktop non-windows shortcuts do not work. I get this error message when I click on one of those shortcut icons: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create and association in the Folders Option control panel". The problem seemed to appear about 30 days ago when I upgraded my Internet Explorer to 8.0.

My computer seems to also be running much slower than usual.

My DDS text log is pasted below:

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo-

Thanks so much for your assistance. Yes, I still need help. Actually I just need more time. I started working on your recommendations from your Jan 31st post, but got distracted by something at home and didn't get to finish the steps. I will give it my best effort these evening and have an update/status for you tomorrow.

Again I greatly appreciate you helping me with my issue.

Hi Gringo -

I have successfully run the Combofix and have attached it's log file as instructed. The good news is my non windows shortcuts on my desktop no longer give me the error message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create and association in the Folders Option control panel" when I click on them, however they never open the application. I just get a white/blank page. The windows based shortcuts (such as Internet Explorer) work, but they are extremely slow to open the window. When I rebooted my laptop after running the Combofix it took more time than usual to boot up. Bottom line, Combofix was successful in ridding my laptop of the error message, but its extremely slow and the non windows shortcuts still do not work.

Thanks again for your help and I look forward to receiving additional instructions from you.

Hello

try running this and see if it helps - but you may have to remake new shoertcuts to your programs

Scan with exeHelper:

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.

  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Hi Gringo -

I tried to save and run the exeHelper application from my desktop, but I get the errors on the attached Word document. I tried to just run the application (not save to my desktop), but that did not work either. Although I didn't get any error messages, the program just didn't run.

I await further instructions.

Gringo -

I disabled McAfee and was successful in running exeHelper. I have attached and pasted the log below.

exeHelper by Raktor
Build 20100414
Run at 08:38:20 on 02/05/12
Now searching...
Checking for numerical processes...
Checking for sysguard processes...
Checking for bad processes...
Checking for bad files...
Checking for bad registry entries...
Resetting filetype association for .exe
Resetting filetype association for .com
Resetting userinit and shell values...
Resetting policies...
--Finished--

I then rebooted my laptop. Nothing has really changed. My laptop is still running extremely slow and the non windows desktop shortcuts still do not work.

Hi Gringo -

Yes it does. I made a new shortcut for weather.com and placed it on my desktop. When I double click on the shortcut windows internet explorer will open, but all I see is a white page. It never opens the web page for weather.com. I don't get the error message anymore as i mentioned in my orginal post, but the shortcuts just don't work (old or new ones). I have attached a picture of what I see when I double click on the new shortcut I made for weather.com.

Hi Gringo -

I tried the latest fix you provided, but unfortunately my laptop is still performing the same. Extremely slow and the old or new non-windows shortcuts on the the desktop still do not work.

Are we about out of options?

Thanks for your help thus far.

Hello

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
