I was directed here from another forum topic. In early December you fine folks helped me with an issue regarding running applications on my laptop. I thought the problem was fixed, but then I lost the ability to use my cd/dvd drive. I am including the requested dds log and have done step 6 of the malware removal guide. I cannot use gmer because my computer is a vista 64bit. I am also getting a prompt everytime I open an application that asks me what program I want to use. It only lets me choose between adobe and firefox or browse. I was able to snip a picture of it if someone needs to see it.

Thanks again,
Mike

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Sorry about the delay. I ran the program that you suggested and installed an exe (?) patch. When I restarted I got my windows task bar back (didn't even realize it was missing!) and do not get the command that asks me what I want to use to open a file (like in the attached pic). I still am not seeing a cd/dvd rom drive when I look at the device manager. Please be patient with my questions, I am a school teacher and it's a challenge for me to set up my elmo let alone do this kind of thing :). That being said, I consider myself excellent at following directions.

Edit: Forgot to add the log you requested. So much for being able to follow directions!

Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Check your present version and update as recommended.
https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Java™ 6 Update 26
Java™ 6 Update 22
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ 6 Update 5
Java™ 6 Update 7

===

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Include in your download" this is not required. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

I still am not seeing a cd/dvd rom drive when I look at the device manager.

Try the Automatic Fix on this page.

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Keep me posted.

Cleaned up the java and adobe updates and old versions. Went onto the Microsoft help website that you suggested and attempted all of the solutions. None have seemed to work. I can hear the drive getting power and it opens and closes.

When I was attempted Microsoft suggestion #2, the upper and lower filters were not shown.

Thanks,
Mike

Look at the Manufacturer's site of the CD to see if you can find the latest driver.

Look at the device in the System folder.

Start > Control Panel > System > Device Manager > the manufacturers CD should be listed.
Any yellow exclamation mark on the entry?

p.s. you you try to run the CD using Start icon > Computer > and if you see the CD is listed right click on it and see what options are given to you.
Try them and post any error message that may be generated.

Thanks for the reply. When I look at the device manager, there is no dvd drive shown at all. My dvd drive worked fine until I started the malware protection directions and the cd drive was turned off. When I attempt to reactivate the drive, the program says "ok" but no drive shows. Attached is a picture of the device manager listings; maybe I'm missing something. Can you point me in the right direction in regards to finding the manufacturer of the drive?

Thanks,
Mike

Lets have a look at your registry for that CD driver.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

If your operating system is 64 bit download this tool:
SystemLook_x64.exe
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy and paste the content of the following bold text into the main textfield:

    :reg
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} /sub

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt
===

Question, have you gone into the BIOS and verified that the drives are detected?

Just browse the bios and let me know what you have found on the CD drive settings.

Thanks for the reply.

Here is the results of the log. I guess I have a 32 bit system, since the 64 version said it wouldn't work on my computer. I thought I had a 64!

This is a hardware/bios problem.

I used Google and search or BIOS will NOT recognize CD/DVD many suggestions but are related to specific to each manufacturer.
If you check the home page of the manufacturer of your computer you will probably find a help forum.

I suggest also that you start a new topic in the "Internal Hardware problem forum" at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum7.html
Some hardware experts may be able to help you better then I can.

On my part you can delete all the tools we used.

This topic will be kept open for 5 days should you have any questions please ask.
