OK, I got ComboFix and like your average idiot I did not properly follow the instructions.

So here I am, without internet.

I removed some references from the log which may identify me in real life, group policy batch scripts.

The story so far:

Ran Combofix with Antivirus installed. Lost internet.
Tried a couple of winsock repair tools, and the microsoft netsh command.
Used system restore to go back six months.
Tried winsock tools again.
Uninstalled Antivirus.
Ran ComboFix again.

Any help at all is MORE THAN APPRECIATED!!

Current ComboFix log:

I managed to fix this, it wasn't configuration problems, it was file problems.
The virus or one of the fixit tools used replaces afd.sys with an invalid earlier or corrupt version.
First replace the version in %%windir%%\system32\dllcache with the correct version.
Next replace the version in %%windir%%\system32\drivers with the correct (I just patched in a slightly newer one from another sp3 machine) version.
Either ignore the file copy for SP3 CD warning or use the CD when prompted.

Cheers!

OK, internet is fixed, but the damn rootkit was still there!

Found an outgoing connection using MalwareBytes
http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation&IpAddress=178.238.233.154

So I had to download TDSS Killer http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684 and it found the hidden partition? folder? or whatnot and cleaned it out.

The outgoing connection is gone....and it looks like this epic journey has ended. If not you'll see more post from me.

OK guys, this may sound like a happy ending, but it was actually more like a unneeded trip down a very treacherous path that could have led to a unusable laptop.

PLEASE seek help first. I am a computer scientist myself, but damn if I had less hubris and asked for help before going gonzo with fixit tools this would have been a 2 hour job instead of a 12 hour one.

Please do not run any tools without help.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image

    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply
