Good Afternoon,

In late December you kind folks helped my wife and I with a serious computer issue. Everything is "ok", I still get a command asking me what I want to open the program with. I am trying to take a screen shot of the warning so that people can understand what I'm talking about. Never get the question when I run a program as an administrator.

The real issue that is worrying me is that my laptop is no longer reading my cdrom drive. Didn't realize that until today when I tried to burn a driver for my wireless usb adapter and realized that my cd rom is not even on the computer menu. I followed the directions about Defogger and reinstalled the program, which runs but when I select the option to turn my cdrom drive back on, I get an error.

Below are links to my previous forum posts last month:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic431188.html/page__p__2500352__fromsearch__1#entry2500352

Can't seem to paste the snipped screen shot, but I saved it so someone can have it that needs it.

Thanks,
Mike

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

I followed the direction #1. Worked like a charm. Can you possibly point me in the right direction for the problem with opening programs? The problem is very annoying.

Thanks again,
Mike

Download and run exeHelper.

  • Please download exeHelper from Raktor to your desktop.
  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
  • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Thanks for the reply. I am at work at the moment, but will follow the directions above in the afternoon when I get home (in California).

Thanks,
Mike

I downloaded the link, installed, and double clicked. Nothing happened. Task Manager doesn't even show it working.
Also, my cd/dvd rom is showing up again. I am going to move onto phase two of the original suggestions.

Update:
1. No device is showing in device manager, so cannot retry 1st option

2. Followed all of the microsoft directions; nothing happened. When I followed the "run" directions, the command couldn't be found.

3. Downloaded the restore cd patch. Wasn't sure how to merge a file; there wasn't that option when I right clicked. Double clicked and restarted, nothing changed.

4. Went to device manager and found the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. I do not have a ata (1or2) to select from. I have the following options:

4 total IDE Channels
Ricoh memory stick controller
Ricoh sd/mmc host controller
Ricoh xD/picture card controller
2 standard dual channel PCI IDE controllers

Ugh!

Thanks,
Mike

It looks like you have more associations messed up.

At this point I'd suggest....

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
