Hello all! I recently had the System Check virus and it did a number on my computer. I believe I've gotten rid of it, but I am having an issue that started after I had the virus. I can no longer perform a System Restore. Can anyone assist me? Thank you!

Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit

EDIT: I will try to perform another System Restore then post the exact error message I'm getting. If you can assist me in the mean time...that would be appreciated.

This is the error I get every time I run a System Restore.

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

The restore point was damaged or was deleted during the restore.

You might want to try System Restore again and choose a different restore point. For more information, see System restore: frequently asked questions.
What other information do you need me to post? Thank you!

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

====================================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

Yes...I think it's turned on. The video provided only shows for Windows 7 and it was not the same for Vista. I can certainly try to check if it's on if someone walks me through checking it in Vista.

Uninstall Eusing Free Registry Cleaner.
Registry cleaners/optimizers are not recommended for several reasons:

  • Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

    The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
  • Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.
  • Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.
  • Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.
  • The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".
Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

We have several issues there.

We have "hosts" file missing.
Download following "hosts"(zipped) file: http://www.bleepstatic.com/fhost/uploads/0/hosts_vista.zip
Unzip it.
Copy hosts file found inside.
Open Windows Explorer and paste hosts file to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder.

NOTE.
If you receive You don't have permission to save in this location message take ownership of C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/
If the above doesn't work save the file to some known location, like your desktop, copy it from there and paste it to "etc" folder.

I removed Eusing Free Registry Cleaner. I can understand your point. However, this issue has been going on long since long before I downloaded that program.

It won't let me replace owner on sub containers and objects. I get this error:

Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of it's subkeys.

I selected both of the names listed and it says the same thing. What should I do? I won't move on until you let me know. Thank you!

Nevermind. I realized that it switched the user and I was able to continue.

Real quick: When I rebooted I got a system error thing in my taskbar. It listed a ton of my programs that it said stopped working unexpectedly. Any idea why that happened?

Also, this has been going on for years, but I guess I'll ask about it while I have someone who really knows what they're doing. I can't delete ZIP files. If I hover over them for more than a second or two it crashes Windows and reloads the OS. The same thing happens when I try to delete them. I have to delete them using the Command Prompt. I can deal with that later, but I thought I'd bring it up just in case it's a quick fix.

Anyway, here you go:

I can turn Windows Firewall on, but it says that I'm not using the recommended settings. I can access System Restore also, but I could always do that. It would just never complete a System Restore.

Thank you for your help up to this point!

Open Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder and rename 77-hosts to just hosts.

When I rebooted I got a system error thing in my taskbar. It listed a ton of my programs that it said stopped working unexpectedly. Any idea why that happened?

Restart one more time and see what happens.

I can turn Windows Firewall on, but it says that I'm not using the recommended settings

Do you have any option to use recommended settings.

I can access System Restore also, but I could always do that. It would just never complete a System Restore.

Can you create new restore point?
If so do it now and we'll go from there.

It rebooted normally after renaming the hosts file. I guess that was it. Thanks!

Windows Firewall is good now.

I created a restore point successfully.

What's next? Thank you!

See if you can use that restore point.
Do NOT try any other one.
