I followed the Bleeping Computer guide for removing System Check and it went quite well for the most part except that TDSSKiller wouldn't run regardless of it's name or extension (double click it and there was a brief hourglass and then back to the normal cursor and nothing happened). So I ran the Symantec FixTDSS tool which said it repaired the MBR. TDSSKiller could then run but it found nothing.

However on booting and randomly during use, avast! free reports it has blocked/quaratined "Win32 DNSChanger-VJ [Trj]" and I could not turn on the Windows Firewall (Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424). If avast! free isn't turned on I get a google result redirect problem, so presumably the rootkit associated with System Check is not being detected by FixTDSS or TDSSKiller. The Firewall wouldn't turn on because the Service no longer existed/wasn't registered. An SFC scan didn't help so I followed the instructions by the user Balon on the sevenforum site: http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/202166-unable-start-windows-firewall-2.html

It helped bring the Windows Firewall service back, but attempting to start it now produces another error: Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x8007042C. I've tried a couple of minor things googled up to try and fix it, mostly Microsoft Fix It options, with no improvement.

Am now at a loss. Would appreciate any help.

Worth noting: when running GMER either normally or as Administrator only the Services, Registry, Files, C:\, D:\ and ADS boxes were changeable - all other boxes were greyed out. So I had to run the GMER test without all the boxes that'd normally be ticked.

After blocking/quarantining Win32 DNSChanger-VJ [Trj] a few times avast! recommended a boot time scan. During which it found a few things, most notably:
c:\Windows\assembly\GAC_32\Desktop.ini had Win32:Sirefef-FQ [Drp]
c:\Windows\assembly\GAC_64\Desktop.ini had Win32:Sirefef-HO [Rtk]
C:\Windows\assembly\temp\kwrd.dll had PUP:Win32:Agent-ANSR[PUP]
c:\Windows\assembly\temp\U\00000002.@ had PUP:Win32:Agent-ANSR[PUP]
c:\Windows\assembly\temp\U\80000004.@ had Threat: Win64:ZAccess-A [Trj]
c:\Windows\System32\consrv.dll had Win32:Sirefef (4 variations including a Drp, Rtk & Trj)

Things seem to be OK now. Windows Firewall starts normally and no more constant quarantining.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?
