I'm running XP pro, sp 3 on my Dell Latitude D830 laptop. I'm good about maintenance and have performed the suggested tasks: defrag, scan disk, full system scan in safe mode, C cleaner, minimize start-up programs. But the machine is still not performing well and I often get "not responding" programs. I'd appreciate your input.

Hi Louis,

thanks for your quick reply. I do have the CDs that came with the system. Aside from opening up the machine to physically clean the inside, I've done just about everything else suggested in the "slow computer/browser" link. thanks again. Jeff

If you can post the content of your error messages, indicating what programs you have open at the time...and tell us how much RAM is installed...how large your Windows partition is...and how much free space currently exists in the Windows partition...that would be useful.

I have 1GB of ram at 2.2 GHz, but I'm not sure where to find the partition size. The hard drive is an 80 GB, about 1/2 full, but I don't think that's what you're after.
As for what programs, it often occurs with Outlook, but has happened with Quicken, Word, and Internet Explorer as well. The error message is the basic: "such and such program is not responding" at which point I hit cntrl alt del to bring up the Task Manager to end the task. Thanks again, Jeff

Let's try this.

Please click the following link, http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe . This link is a direct download to a tool we are going to use. Download the tool, save it to your desktop.

1.Double click on VEW.exe to start the program. If you recieve an "Open File" security warning, press Run.

2.In the "Select log to query" section, check both Application and System.

3.In the "Select type to list" section, check Error. This is the only item in that group that should be checked, we are not interested in the others.

4.In the "Number or dates of events" section, check Date of events... then enter the From and To dates. From 01 01 2012 to 22 01 2012.

5.Press the Run button.

When the process completes, it only takes a few seconds..., Notepad will open with a report file named: VEW.txt.

6. Select entire contents of log, press Copy, saving it to the clipboard. Paste the contents of the VEW.txt file, in your next reply.

This has been an on going problem for some time. I have had virus problems in the past but with help from others here at BC I believe I've cleaned the machine. But maybe there is something still lurking deep inside. Anyway, thanks for your help. Should I expect a response from someone at the other forum?
