Hey fellow techsters, I am in no way a pro at this but do have a bit of experience in XP but have had a problem recently that I cannot resolve nor can techs at other forums where I am a member. The problem is that when the computer is rebooted it will not auto start the firewall.. it pops the little baloon up and I can click it and start it manually but it will not start auto. Now, I have tried everything on the MS website to restore it.. sfc /scannow, reistalled SP3,
ran Rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf
3.Restart Windows
4.Click Start, click Run, type cmd, At the command prompt, Netsh firewall reset

Of course this does restart the firewall but it does not make the firewall start automatically. I have scanned, defragged (which I know doesn't affect that setting)no virus or malware found. Someone has suggested combofix but I am hesitant to run it without experienced help as I don't want to get more problems by removing something by accident that it needs... so if you know the answer to this I am dying to hear the fix.

Best regards to all,
CiTiBoY

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Hi,
Thanks for the response, here is the info you ask for, however on the firewall disabled policy I have tried putting a number 1 in there manually and the registry apparently does not save it? I am the admin, only user too so not sure why the registry isn't saving it, any ideas?
Thanks again,

It looks like something is preventing those settings from being held.

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

Hello again,

Here is the Toobox info, I removed my IP info not comfortable putting that up in a note.. below that is the results of security check. Below that is the aswMBR results. Why do I need avast updates? I already run an antivirus.. it is quite a large file of definitions it downloaded.. I understand running two antivirus programs cause problems themselves? Will this large over 40mb of definitions be removed automatically when done processing? Looks like thers's some type of fake infection. I appreciate your help with this but man it looks like this may be a case of live with it? :) Thanks again.

I see you're infected with a rootkit in the past however the infection is not active anymore.

I still need MBAM log.

Well the mbr file came out as a .dat file, which I don't understand. I would post it but not sure how to get the info out of it. :huh: Oh wait the mbam log, got it: :thumbup2: By the way, I you are right I did get a rootkit which a guy over on the MBAM forum help me run combofix to take care of.. I hate having all this leftover stuff on the system, I guess it will take a full clean reinstall to completely wipe this junk clean? :blink: Anyway, here's the MBAM Log..note it did not detect the infection that your program did?? Weird huh? Here we go:

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
    NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

I did run TFC and it had me reboot, same result with firewall.. I don't have another browser to try and really don't want to install another. I fear this is not going in a recovering direction as my puter seems to be slower since running these last few programs. I do appreciate your efforts though, I believe it is going to require a more hands on look as I don't want to have to reformat because I don't know where many of the install disks and keys to them are to reload this thing. Thanks for helping. CB

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

WinXP has crashed, after running the TFC file it would not boot back up telling me it could not be repaired. Fortunately I am running a dual boot system with 7 on the other partition which allow me to comeback here to post this. When I try to reinstall xp to the same drive it renamed it to drive E? Should be drive D as win7 is installed on C drive. I will probably have to get a tech to come in and figure out how to get it back to D: drive because xp will not allow you to change the drive letter after xp is installed on it. Thanks for trying to help, it's my own fault shoulda just lived with the manual start of the firewall.
