Hello and thank you for your asistance.

I noticed a popup Tuesday or Wednesday about a neutralized threat from Symantec Endpoint Protection. I opened tass manager, saw temp:winupd.exe, and terminated that process. After an internet search for winupd.exe, I disconnected my computer from the internet and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program. It located the winupd.exe file and prompted me to restart to remove it. I did so and the winupd.exe file was not in my task manager after restarting. However, I noticed that two iexplore.exe processes were listed in task manager when I opened a single browser window. I closed and opened internet explorer several times and each time I opened it, two processes were listed in task manager even though I only had the one window open. I'm concerned that winupd.exe wasn't fully removed or that other malware may have also been installed. I ran Malwarebytes and another program called Freefixer but neiter located additional problems. Logs are below and attached as the instructions in the Preparation Guide suggests. The GMER program crashed twice when I tried to run it. First time, I got a windows is closing the program message... I could see at the bottom left that it was trying to scan "Device/HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1" when it crashed. I tried to run it again and got a blue screen saying that there was an error and that windows was shutting down. Thank you very much for your assistance!

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/439205 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Here are fresh DDS logs. GMER crashed again when I attempted to run it. Thanks again for your help.

EDIT: I'm updating to let you know that I have Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2, 32-bit OS. I do not have the installation disk. Sorry for not including this info before.

Hello and welcome. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.” Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed.
Posted Image Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
  • You will be asked if you want to use Avast! Free anti virus for scanning - select No
  • Click the "Scan" button to start scan
  • On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.
Please include the following in your next post:
  • aswMBR log

RPMcMurphy,

I don't know what the proxy thing is. I'm not the only one who uses this computer though. I will ask.

MBAM locked up while scanning C:\Windows\System32\nl-NL\comdlg32.dll.mui after an elapsed time of a little over 57 minutes. There was no error message. The display just locked up and the mouse would not move on the screen. I left it on for a long time after I saw it had locked up but no dice.

I ran MBAM again in Safe Mode and here's the log (I didn't have to follow a bunch of the steps you listed because it didn't find anything):

How is the computer running now? Please do this next:

I still need to know if this proxy was set intentionally (if this is a home PC chances are it was not)

ProxyServer = 200.177.228.4:80

Posted Image Please go to here to run an online scan with ESET.
    • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
    • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
    • When asked, allow the activex control to install

    • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
    • Click on Advanced Settings and ensure these options are ticked:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications

    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish

RPMcMurphy,

-Computer seems to be running okay. I note that in task manager it still shows two listings for iexplore.exe and when I was running the ESET scanner it showed two listings for OnlineCmdLineScanner.exe. Is this a problem?
-I do not believe that the proxy was set intentionally. I definitely did not and my housemates say the same. How would I get rid of it?
-0 threats were found

Thanks again for your help.

In that case, we need to remove that proxy. This will do it:

Posted Image Open Notepad Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad ) and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above DDS::

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = 200.177.228.4:80

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then disable your security programs and drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Posted Image

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Please include the following in your next post:
  • ComboFix log

lexham:

Your logs look good. All I have left for you is an update and some very important cleanup:

Posted Image Your Adobe reader needs to be updated. Please visit Adobe's site and grab the newest version. Be sure to watch for and uncheck any boxes offering to install other software.

Posted Image Uninstall ComboFix
  • Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard or click Start -> Run. Copy and past the following text into the run box that opens and press OK:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Posted Image

Posted Image Delete the following tools along with any other logs you saved from our work:
  • DDS
  • GMER
  • aswMBR
Posted Image Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
Posted Image Finally, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions to help you stay clean in the future:
  • Restart any anti-malware programs that we disabled while we were cleaning your machine.
  • Keep your antivirus application and MBAM current and updated. Scan with them at least weekly.
  • Please read this post for some helpful information.
Please post once more so I know you are all set and I can mark this thread resolved. Good luck and stay safe!
