I just removed a FakeAlert trojan with MalWare Bytes, however, it has left Windows looking a lot worse than it did before it was infected. I was able to unhide all of my files that I wanted to keep and I transferred them successfully to an external drive. My background is still black, my start menu is empty, I can select programs and it lists them...but not all of them and the ones it lists are empty when you click on them. The only way I can run anything is if I go to Computer > C: > Program Files (x86). Oh, and the bottom task bar has completely changed.
Anyway, I did a system restore to get back to a point before my computer was infected with the virus. I was then greeted with the following message:
"System Restore failed to extract the file (C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\1394.dll) from the restore point. The restore point was damaged or was deleted during the restore."
I then tried to restore to the same point but on Safe Mode. I received the same message when my computer re-booted.
I then tried to restore from the normal mode to the next restore point before the one I had been trying. I still received the same message.
I'm all out of ideas aside from attempting more advanced restore methods, but I was wondering if there was a way I could avoid that, if possible. If not, I have everything backed up, I would just need to re-install all of my programs, etc.
What would you suggest?
Thank you for your time,
