Posted 20 January 2012 - 02:22 AM

I am running a 6 PC peer to peer network at work with one person in particular who pays no attention to the dangers out there especially when it comes to e-mail attachments.

Since coming back from our Seasonal vacations our e-mail accounts are being blocked by our ISP due to a suspected mailbot with this error message:-

"Sending' reported error (0x800CCC67) : ' The server responded: 421 4.0.0 Intrusion prevention active for [41.145.22.134]'"

I have on one PC run 'Malwarebytes Anti-Malware', SuperAntispyware, ExterminateIT and Combofix' I want to add that your instructions for running Combofix were a great help as I rate myself as "mid stream computer literate."

Anyway the problem disappeared for one day and promptly returned this morning and would appreciate any help in identifying the infected PC and clearing the infection, and will the cleaning last long enough for me to clear the other machines 1 day at a time?

5 of the PCs are running 'AVG free' and 1 is running Avira Pro. (I think - bosses laptop and I don't have access at the moment)

I was requested to attach a DDS log (Hope I've been successful) and the ComboFix log:-

Hi - I have scanned all the PCs on the network and have zipped and attached the logs.

The MunyaPC would not complete the ComboFix scan and re-booted after about step 32, consequently there is no ComboFix log.

The 'mailbot' is still present as our mail server was blocked again this morning.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/439057 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello, it is impossible to clean six PCs in one topic. If this is a corporate network and it contains important data, please be sure your system administrator/tech support knows about this! If you are the person responsible, please be aware of the following.
  • There may be restrictions and modifications installed on such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware.
  • Any infection could jump terminals in a computer network.
  • There may also be legal issues regarding any loss of business data that I do not wish to deal with.
  • Some people who come here use their computers for work, and the computers may contain the patient records of a physician or the financial records of an accountant's clients or credit card and bank account information of their employer's customers.
  • There may be tremendous risks and legal liability for such users for not fully securing the computer. We will not know this unless we ask. We do not want to be accidentally putting those we help in vulnerable positions for lawsuits.
  • Business factors outweigh technical factors in making the reformat and reinstall decision. Sometimes friends give missing CDs or lack of expertise as a reason for not doing a reformat and reinstall.
  • The cost of replacing missing Windows XP and MS Office CDs and getting an Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer to come in for 3 hours to do the reinstall and apply all the critical updates, is trivial compared with the potential cost of a multi-million dollar lawsuit for breach of trust if confidential client or patient information is disclosed.
  • In specific situations where highly confidential information about others is on the computer, and a backdoor virus or trojan is found, we are helping people more by identifying that they have a backdoor trojan which puts them in a particularly vulnerable situation and sending them to seek local professional help from a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer or Certified Information Systems Security Professional or Global Information Assurance Certification Certified Security Expert or Certified Computing Professional or Internet Service Provider than we would be trying to fully resolve their problems long distance.

The saest course of action would be to change all email passwords to prevent spam and isolate all computers on the network until all of them are cleaned.

regards, Elise

Thanks for the warning Elise. There will not be any comeback as we do supply software or any such to our customers and we are by all means a small business.

At this point in time it looks as though the problem is isolated to my PC. When arriving at work I check our other PCs and send test mails to ourselves before switching my PC on. Only when I send a second mail does the intrusion alarm come up.

After our Mail Service Provider has lifted the intrusion the system stay "clean' for 24 hrs.

I have just completed the scans requested and will post them now.

Are you still having the spam problem even after changing email passwords?

This is the fortunate part, our mail service provider requires authentication on each of our e-mail addresses. So when the "Bot" attempts to send mail the "Intrusion" alarm is activated and no messages can be sent.

Typically these last 2 mornings the mail was blocked only after my PC was used to send mail. I sent messages from 2 other PCs before switching my PC on and the alarm and block only appeared after my PC was used.
Thanks
Geoff

Doesn't answer my question if you actually changed the passwords. :)

I am sorry Elise - seems as though I have not understood the reason to change the passwords.

The passwords have NOT been changed seeing as the "block" on the mail server is actually preventing mail being sent. The 'bot' does not have a password and we have not had any mail returned as a result of spam or any other reason.
My Mail SP has told me that his server is configured requiring authentication for this exact reason and harmful or spam mail does not pass through the server.

If you would like I can arrange to change the passwords on all 10 email addresses tomorrow when I am back at work.

I will PM you my e-mail address and the server address.

Usually when a mail address sends out massive spam, the account is compromised and not the computer, meaning that someone somehow has hacked your password (usually through phishing). The only solution is to change all passwords to affected email accounts. Even if the spam is not actually sent out due to the way your mail server is set up, it still means someone has access to your account and attempts to send it out (usually a spam bot). The only way to make sure this spam bot has no longer access is to change the password.

Hi Elise

Don't you ever sleep :P

OK so yesterday I disconnected from my 'cabled' LAN and went on to a wireless LAN that uses another Service Provider and left the PC till this AM.

First thing after arriving at work was to send test messages back and forth between all our PCs with mine still on the wireless connection and the Mail Server did NOT get blocked with the intrusion alarm.

Reconnected to my 'Wired' LAN, disabled the wireless connection and sent mail back and forth between all our PCs and again the Mail Server did NOT get blocked with the intrusion alarm.

It would appear as though the final scan with ESET that found 2 Trojans and deleted them did the trick and the virus has been removed from my PC.

I have as a matter of course changed my e-mail account passwords anyway and will use this approach if the 'Intrusion Alarm' re-appears.

Thank you for your kind assistance and time, rest assured that everyone I know will learn of BC and it's kind volunteers.

Many, many thanks
Geoff

Glad to hear that! :)

Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader Version X. and save it to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the "Free McAfee Security plan Plus" option or any other Toolbar you are offered
  • Click the download button at the bottom.
  • If you use Internet Explorer and do not wish to install the ActiveX element, simply click on the click here to download link on the next page.
  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the "Adobe Setup - Welcome" window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
Your Adobe Reader is now up to date!

Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7u2.
  • Look for "JDK 7u2 (JDK or JRE).
  • Click the "Download JRE" button at the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • Select "Windows x86 Offline" and click on jre-7-windows-i586.exe
  • Save it to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Uninstall all older versions of Java (any item with Java Runtime Environment, JRE or J2SE in the name).
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Install the newest version by double clicking (run as Administrator for Windows Vista/Seven) the downloaded file.

ALL CLEAN
--------------
Your machine appears to be clean, please take the time to read below on how to secure the machine and take the necessary steps to keep it clean :)

Please do the following to remove the remaining programs from your PC:
  • Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
  • Click start > run and type combofix /uninstall, press enter. This will remove Combofix from your computer.
Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  • Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall. If you are connected to the internet through a router, you are already behind a hardware firewall and as such you do not need an extra software firewall.
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing.
