First, let me say that I was an IT manager for over 30 years, so I am very technical. However most of my expertise was UNIX, not Windows (ugh!)

Norton reports "Tidserv Activity 2" constantly, and it is obviously present (web ads, redirects, etc. as you'd expect). I have run many common tools including: Norton full scan, Malwarebytes full scan, Ad-Aware full scan, FixTDSS (reports nothing found).. some I also ran in SAFE mode. Some "threats" were found and removed, but not this one. I then created the Norton Bootable Recovery console disc, and ran both the Erase tool and the full scan. Neither corrected the problem. (I also run WinPatrol - not that this is significant, but I really like it and have used it for years). Earlier on, I thought that perhaps Norton itself was corrupted, so I completely uninstalled it and then re-installed it from Comcast (as part of my ISP tool set). This time it included some additional tool called Constant Guard Protection Suite... I checked for a corrupted HOSTS file (there was none, so just to be sure I created the default windows hosts file). Also ran a few registry checking/cleaning tools.

I seem to have run out of ideas. I hate windows! :) So frustrating to see the problem but not have a decent tool to isolate and remove it (never mind block it in the first place). Anyhow, I've followed all of the preparation steps (I think). You may see a lot of "stuff" running... besides my technical background and hence lots of tools, etc., (like WinVNC in both server and listener modes), I am also a professional photographer and have a LOT of tools installed... and a TON of little files, which made GMER run for about 8 hours. By the way, GMER failed many hours into its run and displayed a BLUE SCREEN... I snapped a photo of it with my phone and have attached it as well... reports driver problem. After that, I decided to run GMER in SAFE mode (hope that's ok?) It did find something..

Don't know if it's helpful or just redundant, but the WinPatrol tool allows for generation of a Hijack log, so I've also attached that...

OK so here's the main dds log:

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Thanks for the reply. I followed the instructions and got partway... but problems. Here's sort of what happened:

The first run, it did ask for recovery console, and I allowed the download. After that everything hung for a long time. I finally closed it and re-started Combofix.

This time it detected Rootkit ZeroAccess. Then Rootkit detected message.
Warned about these twice. Then auto reboot.
After the reboot I got numerous errors about corrupted files (almost all in temp files), and it suggested running CHKDSK.

Eventually (after stage_4 completed) got a windows error that pev.3XE encountered a problem and had to close. I let it run, and it seemed to still be running.
More CHKDSK messages. Finally another auto reboot.

On the reboot Western Digital utility (I forgot to disconnect the external hard drive before I started this) noted that the drive was "damaged". I unplugged the drive, assuming it is ok.

The reboot got stuck on ""Windows is starting up". Never proceeded from there.

At this point I am going to try a manual power-off reboot...

I am getting messages of corruption. I tried running CHKDSK last week when I got such a warning, but I guess the virus interfered because even on reboot, chkdsk didn't run. Should I try it again now? I'll wait to hear your advice...

Hello

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

OK, did that. It found a threat and I clicked continue to clean. Then required reboot. On reboot, it decided to run CHKDSK C: (maybe from when I scheduled it last week?). That is running now... finding lots of corruption :(
Will update you with the log as soon as the boot completes. Lucky I have laptop available :)

Even after reboot, it gets stuck at "Acquiring network address" Can't get connected to router. Used a flash drive to get the log to the laptop. Here it is:

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?
