This started with my computer having trouble maintaining internet connection, then no internet. Checked and other computer that shares the router also had no internet. I checked both computers and LAN settings automatically check was unchecked on both computers checked both and still no internet. Started working with Broni as a network issue. Discovered that resetting the router gave me access with the other computer but when I plugged mine in I got about 5 minutes of internet and then none. (Had to reset router so the other computer would see internet)

Followed Broni's instructions, ran defogger just fine, ran dds fine, ran GMER and it hung up about 5 minutes in. It would not respond so had to reboot. I booted into safe mode and ran all three. They seemed to work although I am not sure GMER finished it ran fine for about 9 hours then kind of stopped but I let it run for the next 2 days.
Here are the logs all from safe mode. (I have shortcuts to the 2 DDS files in "My Recent Documents" but they are not there and clicking on them brings up "Missing Shortcuts" message.)

From Safe-mode

Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/438603 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I have Windows XP Professional 32 bit. It comes from a Windows NT original which I have the disks and the upgrade disks to Windows XP Professional. (I rebuilt it because the motherboard went out and had a heck of a time re-registering it with MS. I would like to avoid that again if possible.)

In anything other than Safe-Mode I either have no icons or the icons are on the screen like a screen capture. I have mouse movement but clicking on anything does nothing. I have no taskbar and cntl-alt-del to bring up the task manager just gets a few seconds of the spinning clock then nothing. I have no right mouse button function on the desktop and left clicks as I said before do nothing. Therefore, I could not run DDS or GMER. I have done a hard rebooted back into Safe-mode since it seems the only way to do anything you may ask of me in the future. Thanks

I tried a clean boot into normal mode by doing selective startup under the general tab in System Configuration. The only things checked were “Load System Services” and “Use Original BOOT.INI”. The only services loaded were Microsoft all other were disabled. It booted up fine I was able to run DDS and GMER. I have no internet connection. The LAN connections says “Limited or no connectivity…” When I tried to repair the LAN connection.

Windows is taking the following actions:
Renewing your IP address.

I got the error message:

Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the
Following action cannot be completed:
Renewing your IP address
For assistance, contact the person who manages your network.

I checked my network connections settings they were fine .
I checked the Internet Options – Connections Tab and “Automatically detect settings” is checked.
So as it stands:
Clean boot into normal
Don’t know what is/was causing loss of internet (Virus?), previous boots with just desktop with no icons or frozen screen shot desktop with no icons, previous mouse movement but no right or left button responses from mouse (I have not tried non-selective boot startup).
Here is the dds and attached are the two files attach.txt and Ark.txt. Thank you.

Oh man, it's late...

There's no change in the aswMBR log from the previous topic. There doesn't seem to be any rootkit activity currently so let's run a more powerful tool and see if we can flush whatever it is out. I assume you are transferring programs from another machine via USB? That's okay, I'll let you know if a tool isn't going to work that way. Ignore the "download to desktop" instructions from now on.

Combofix is fine for the transfer, let's give it a run

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications including Firewalls, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Avast was unsecured with a big red X saying to click on fix to start being protected.
I disabled the firewall from the control panel and then started comfix.exe.
Got a beep and message saying Avast was still active and to turn it off before clicking ok
right clicked on Avast disabled shields until next reboot, clicked okay to comfix message. I got another message saying Avast still active but combofix will continue at my risk. It says it only takes about 10 minutes, but it's been 10 minutes and it has only completed Stage_3 so I think I will send the log tomorrow morning. (may be highly infected) You get some rest and I will take my son to basketball practice. Thanks until tomorrow.

There doesn't seem to be anything around at the moment. Something has clearly ripped through your system though.

Please download Unhide

Once the program has been downloaded, double-click on the Unhide.exe icon on your desktop and allow the program to run. This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives. If there are any files that were purposely hidden by you, you will need to hide them again after this tool is run.

Then

Download and run this script to restore the Start menu

Then please run MiniToolBox

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Thanks M0le. Unhide is taking a while and I have a question if you have the time. What is that lets you know that something clearly ripped through my system? I have that sense but everytime I scan I get nothing. It's like a ghost, I feel like something is there but I don't see any evidence. Just curious what the logs tell you that they don't tell me.

C drive is done, starting on D which is external this may take a while seeing as there is 111GB on D and only 58GB on C and if it does H, J, K, L externals thats 700GB and 500GB between them. This may take 5 hours by my quick calculations. I will post the MiniToolBox results after running the reset script. Thanks

Good morning/afternoon there unhide ran past when I went to bed but finished fine. winxp-pro-32bit-sm-reset ran fine and said a reboot was needed before changes will take place. MiniToolBox also ran fine this morning and here is the results.

I'm not seeing anything malicious so far.

Please run another scanner, OTL

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
