Got a virus/malware/trojan. Started as something claiming to be "Win 7 <something>" (didn't write down the name). I ran Malwarebytes and Outpost AV a couple times, and they both found stuff, and deleted said stuff. However, whatever it was has wreaked havoc. My current computer status is...

- Cannot boot normally. Get's stuck in a continuous loop. Can boot to Safe Mode.

- Early on, no .exe files would work, including Malwarebytes (MWB). Was able to right-click and pick 'start', and MWB would then run. MWB will now run fine, but Outpost AV will not.

- Most other .exe programs will now run (in Safe Mode), but my Microsoft Office says it has lost the identification information, or something like that, and kicks me out.

- Did run SuperAnti-spyware and it did not find anything.

- MWB finds no more threats.

Thanks.

Just a quick note: After this is fixed I plan to install a better AV program. I am leaning toward Norton. I have also purchased the paid version of Malwarebytes, and will activate that as well. I have not done so yet just in case this infection would cause problems with either.

Now, to the reports...

First of all you're not running any AV program.
Install ONE of these:
- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- free Microsoft Security Essentials: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials
- free Comodo Antivirus: http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/antivirus.php
Update, run full scan, report on any findings.

Then, Windows firewall doesn't seem to be running.
See if you can turn it ON.

That's what the Outpost was supposed to be for, but it has been disappointing to say the least. It also seems to have been turned off and/or inactivated by this issue. Anyway...

I was able to turn on the Windows firewall.

I downloaded and installed avast. This required a re-boot, after which the firewall had to be turned on again.

Ran avast as a full scan. Did not give a text-based log file, unless I just couldn't find it. It found two infected files on external drives, but found nothing in the registry, or C drive, or anywhere else. I allowed the program to deal with the infected files.

Scan prompted another re-boot, which required the firewall needing to be turned back on... again.

Boot sequence is still the continuous loop, but will still boot into Safe Mode (with networking). And that's the status, as of right now.

Hope this helps.

Boot sequence is still the continuous loop

Please explain.

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

Nothing was found from either application.

Can I presume that the infection itself has since been taken care of, and that the "after effects" are still lingering? Total guess on my part.

Regarding the continuous boot loop... When I boot/reboot the computer it starts fine, and even gets me to the "Starting Windows" screen, then it hangs up for about a minute, then it starts back all over at the very beginning. It will do this over and over and over if I let it. That's what I mean by "continuous loop".

I can, however, interrupt the loop by pressing F8 and directing it into Safe Mode, which is what I have been doing for this process.

While in safe mode....

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Same problem?

Same problem. Would not boot normally. Got the continuous loop.

Also had to turn the Windows firewall back on again after the reboot into Safe Mode.

This is a desktop, btw.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

Due to time, and frustration, I have opted to do an OS re-install. Work files aren't an issue, and program re-installation will be a hassle, but not insurmountable.

Thank you for your help, though. I appreciate it.
