Posted 16 January 2012 - 10:16 PM

I got hit with a virus on my work laptop, and the IT guy recognized the symptoms and told me to follow the procedure at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-home-security-2012. The first time I went through the procedure, I had trouble running the FixNCR.reg file from step 3 because it kept telling me some of those keys were in use. (I had to use the run-browser-as-admin trick to download it, as I can't find my flash drive or any blank CDs.) After a few tries running it with the same errors, I continued on and downloaded rkill and ran it several times, seeing some oddities that I'll describe below.

Then I downloaded and ran TDSSkiller and it said it didn't find anything, so I downloaded and ran Mbam. It found a couple of processes in memory and killed them, but didn't find anything else. So I rebooted my computer as the directions said, and when it came back up the virus was active again! and most of the things I'd downloaded the first time were no longer visible.

So I'm going through the procedure a second time now. This time, FixNCR.reg didn't give me any errors, which gave me some hope, but rkill is still behaving in ways that seem odd to me. Here's what happens:

  • I run rkill under whichever name I've downloaded this time (so far I've tried iexplore.exe, userinit.exe, and winlogon.exe)
  • Dialog windows pop up that say either "iexplore.exe has stopped working" or "pev.exe" has stopped working (usually iexplore.exe only comes up once at the beginning, and pev.exe comes up several times).
  • I hit "Close the program" on each of those dialog boxes and eventually rkill completes.
  • But most of the time, the rkill.log that pops up doesn't list any processes as having been killed; there's just a big blank space in that spot.

I can run rkill several times in a row and this just keeps happening every time. Once in a while, rkill does list one or two processes that were "terminated by Rkill or while it was running", but they tend to have random-looking names that are nothing like "iexplore.exe" or "pev.exe". Just now, for instance, the rkill log says "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\grpconv.exe" was the only process terminated.

The first time through the procedure, I eventually stopped running rkill and moved on to TDSSkiller and MBAM, but remained infected. I'm wondering if I should do something different this time.

Oh, and when I ran GMER to get the log needed for posting here, that didn't work as expected either. According to figure 13 on Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help, all the boxes should be checked except IAT/EAT, Show All, and the non-C drives. But when I run GMER, all the boxes are unchecked except for Services, Registry, Files, and C:, and they're all grayed out so I can't check any of them.

Anyway, I've attached the files below. I hope somebody can help me through this because I've already spent 4 or 5 hours on this.

Oh, and things are complicated because this is a work laptop, so my account has virtually no privileges and everything I install or "Run as Admin" makes me enter an admin account and password, and when I run the browsers that way to download things they put them in the admin user's directory where I can't reach them from my account, so I've just been downloading everything into C:\ and running them from there, and even then it sometimes seems like the utilities are also running as the admin instead of me... I dunno. I'm very tired and confused at this point. I'll greatly appreciate any help you can offer!

And here's the DDS.txt file from my first time through the procedure:

Argh, I think I just figured out why this procedure didn't work -- it's the wrong one! I started searching through your other procedures, and "System Check" is the one I've got, as described at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-system-check. My IT guy steered me to the wrong procedure.

So let me try running that procedure later tonight and see if that does the job. Should I repost here if it doesn't, or delete this topic and start a new topic for the System Check problem? I don't know what the protocol is here.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/438488 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!
