Removed the xp home security virus with all the steps advised but now I can't open my browsers. Running XP Professional Service Pack 3. Run the diagnosis on the internet explorer and it tells me to contact the computer manufacturer. I also use Cricket Broadband internet and can text off of it. Just can't do any thing else if it requires using internet explorer. Please help.

What happens when you open Internet Explorer? Do you get any error messages?

Go Start > Run and type "CMD". In the box that opens type these two commands hitting enter after each one.

netsh int ip reset reset.log
netsh winsock reset catalog

Then reboot and see if you can connect

Go Start > Connect To > Show All Connections.

Then disable all the internet/LAN connections listed there except your Cricket Broadband connection.

See if that helps.

Went into the connections and all of my lan/internet connections are disabled except cricket broadband. Do I need to reinstall internet explorer? I do have the original xp disk. I don't have a recovery disk though. The computer says everything is connected except when you open the browser or have to use explorer for updates. i am at a loss.. <_<

You are definitely connected as the FSS scan reported this:

Connection Status:
==============
Localhost is accessible.
WAN connected
Google IP is accessible.
Yahoo IP is accessible.

So you could try reinstalling internet explorer to see if that helps.

really quick stupid question. when i clicked on the add/remove windows components all the internet objects were automatically checked when it pulled up. are these missing components or are they always automatically checked? Sorry for the stupid question but i have never had to mess with add/remove windows components. if are they are checked and i hit install will they be the only programs messed with? Again sorry for the stupid questions. I just don't want to mess anything up worse than it already is.

Actually lets skip that for now. I just read that you cannot connect with Mozilla either so I don't think Internet Explorer is the problem.

What antivirus are you using?

Yes I would definitely uninstall it. Then reboot and run this:

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
