My laptop got a virus about a month ago and it was shutting down my anti-virus program (Norton), and I was seeing some other random problems. Programs show up as (empty) in the start menu. I had a similar problem about a year ago, although not as aggressive, ran RKill, then the malawarebytes scanner and it was fixed.

This time, it started out similar to the previous virus, in that I would get a rundll error on start up, so I tried the same fix (RKill/Malawarebytes scan), but it didn't help. Then it seemed to get progressively worse. I tried the combofix program on the advice of a friend, the results of the scan are below.

Also, hadn't been able to use the wireless on the laptop, so I downloaded everything from a separate laptop and transferred via memory card. Combofix ran in reduced functionality mode since I had no internet access, and couldn't install the recovery console. Now that combofix was run, the wireless is back up and running again it seems, but programs in the start menu still show up as (empty).

Also, forgot to mention, in the interim I bought a new laptop for work, the affected one was 5+ years old anyway...got my fair wear and tear out of it...but would really hope to use this one as a back-up/beater for the wife to use. In the fix process I just uninstalled Norton and Malawarebytes, so it is stripped of any antivirus. I'm assuming I should not risk connecting to the wireless at all until I download and transfer new AV program to it...is that the best way to go about it?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:
