My Webroot Secure Anywhere has detected the following malware:
Smbr.1 in C (identified as Medium Risk Malware)

Webroot is unable to remove it (it goes through the motions but upon next scan it shows up again).

Problem appeared about a month ago. I ran an updated Maleware bytes scan then, but it did not detect any threats.
I have been ignoring the problem but recently I had an unauthorized use of my PayPal account (purchase) so I may have a problem.

I run Vista home Premium service pack 2.

From my minuscule research it seems that it is a case of System Management Mode (SMM)rootkit.

There is whole article about that stuf here http://www.docstoc.com/docs/48102922/SMM-Rootkits--A-New-Breed-of-OS-Independent-Malware

but I don't speak that language. (If it is, I am not sure how webroot was able to detect it though)

I would appreciate help with this if possible.

FARBAR:

I was not able to use farbar scanner as it gives me an error: Line 2468 (File"C\Uers\Owner\Downloads\FSS(2).exe"): Error: Variable used without being declared. (also webroot identifies it as a trojan generator)

Hope this helps

I'll ask tool's author about that error.
Hold on there.

You're running two firewalls:

Webroot Desktop Firewall
Windows Firewall Enabled!

If you want to keep Webroot firewall disable Windows firewall.

Can you test something for me?

Re-run FSS with only one box selected at a time.
I want to know which option causes the error.

http://www.computing.net/answers/security/is-this-malware-mbr1-in-c-detected-by-webroot/37520.html

Just got word from WEBROOT support that "$mbr.1 in c:" is a false positive, and they will try to resolve in an update within the next 24 hours.

It looks like it takes them longer :)

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

Also, FSS author posted an update.
Delete your FSS file, download new one, check all boxes, run it and see if you'll get same error.

thanks for heads up on the false positive. I suspected that was the case and that is why I ignored it for over a month, but after my paypal experience, I wanted to get someone who knows what they are talking about to take a look.

The TFC did not work for me - It stops working and I have to reboot. I tried it several times yesterday and just now with the same result. (I used windows cleaning utility last night instead).

Do you still want me to run the ESET?

Try to run TFC from safe mode.

Yes I'd like to see Eset scan results.

Your computer is clean Posted Image

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll remove all old restore points and create fresh, clean restore point.

Turn system restore off.
Restart computer.
Turn system restore back on.

If you don't know how to do it...
Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405
Vista and Windows 7: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-system-restore-in-windows-vista/

2. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

3. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

4. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

5. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

6. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

7. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

8. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

9. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

10. Except for MBAM and TFC, which are keepers you can simply delete all other tools we used as they don't install.
