Running XP Home SP3/IE8.

I've had the XP Security virus pop up a couple of times over the past few months and been able to remove it. After 'removing' it again a couple of days ago, I was still affected in the following ways.

*When trying to open Outlook Express, I was asked to choose a file to associate it with
*Same issue when trying to open anything in the Control Panel, 'choose file association'
*Google searches appeared to provide the normal list of topics, but clicking on any of them redirected me to random Ad websites.

The first two issues are gone after updating and running Malware Bytes, Spybot S&D, Ad Aware numerous times. Malware Bytes detected four viruses but I did not think to copy what they were.

I am left with the third issue, redirected Google searches. Other than that, things seem OK if a little slow.

It would be my very uneducated guess that this virus has been on my laptop all along and will continue to pop up until eliminated.

Any help you could offer to get rid of this completely would be much appreciated!
