What are the Risks associated with using an unsecure network?

Are you using a secure network when you use, for example, Wi-Fi at a restaurant?

I have had a router with a secure network but now recently I switched to Cricket mobile service and have a broadband connection with a modem I connect to my computer like you would do with a memory stick.
