Sorry that I could not be more descriptive in the topic but I am not even sure if this computer is still infected or not. I have ran tons of programs of which i will list, and they all report the system as clean but the computer is still running very slowly.

First I turned off System Restore and i have cleaned out the temp internet files. Next I ran Nod32 antivirus multiple times until it no longer found any more infections. After that I ran Spybot Search and Destroy which was able to remove everything but WinHound. After that I ran the tool listed on this site to remove WinHound/SpyAxe/etc. After the tool was done I rebooted and verified that WinHound was gone. Next I ran AdAware SE and removed everything it found. Finally I installed SpySweeper and removed everything it found.

After all that the computer was still running very slowly, so I ran defrag on the hard drive but nothing has seemed to help. As of now I am stumped and have no clue as to why the system is running so slow. I would rather not have to reinstall XP again because I just did it 3 months ago.

So below is my HijackThis log, if someone could please tell me if there is something I am missing that is causing it to run slowly it would help me out greatly.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Amy and welcome to the forum. Seems you have done my work for me. I want you to know you have followed the basic steps, I do see some adware that will slow you down, I also have to say that malware is only one thing that can slow down the computer. I will post links to some ideas you can try later in the thread. Let's address that adware, clean some more and see what happens.

I see a lot of aol junk? Is that the ISP or Yahoo DSL?

1) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

2) Spysweeper...did you buy it? If not, once the trial is over you may as well install it, gives you no benefits. It is also slowing you down now as it does use resources. Please run a sweepand post the log you get.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://newsearchs.com/gatept.php?pn=srch0p15total7s2

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_...refetch-XP.html

5) If you don't have a good cleaner, use this one with these instuctions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

6) Look over some of these suggestion, you do have programs running that you probably do not use everytime you boot:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/commun...s/IEtopten.mspx
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/runbetter.htm
http://www.linkgrinder.com/tutorials/10_Ea...rs_article.html

Restart the computer and post the sweep results, a new HJT log and your feedback.

Thanks...pskelley

To answer you first question, all of the AOL stuff is from Yahoo DSL.

I already had the newest version of both Spybot and AdAware, but I checked again for new updates and reran the scans.

As for you question about SpySweeper I have not bougth it yet, but I might if it will help stop this problem from happening again.

I removed all of the files in the Prefetch folder and ran CCleaner. As of right now the computer still starts up extremly slow (about 5mins or so before you can acutally do anything) but after that it seems to be running ok. I am going to look through the services to see what all is not needed that I can stop, as well as stopping other programs from running at start up to see if it helps any.

Thanks again for the help.

I must apologize, new software is coming but I did not get the notification that you posted. If you do not hear from me within 8 hours of a post, PM me here:

Thanks for the feedback, SpySweeper does the job when I have to use it but I have never run the program myself. Some folks swear by it. I only know that there is no benefit after the trial unless you purchase the realtime protection and I am sure it is part of the boot slowdown. I want to say I have three computers and I do not feel five minutes in unusual for a boottime, it is easy five minutes before my firewall is up, which is last to load.

I want to point out that adware which I had marked for HJT removal is still in the log?

Don't be fooled by the Yahoo word in these adware links. This is adware and yes, Yahoo is in bed with the enemy. I suggest you use HJT to remove this junk.

These are booting everytime and may not be needed:

I removed the items with HJT but they must of came back. I will remove them again. I also have another computer which runs fine and is behind a router so it does not have a software firewall. I also stopped a bunch of unneed programs from starting up at boot time which helped some.

Thanks for all your help.

You are welcome, I looked to see what might be blocking the HJT removal of the adware and Spysweeper is the only thing I can see, unless some function of your AV does this, I am not real familiar with it. I would also suggest a free diagnostic here: Diagnostic: http://www.pcpitstop.com/ The folks will even help with understanding it here: http://pcpitstop.invisionzone.com/index.php?showforum=6 Even though CCleaner does clean the registry, I have a much better registry cleaner with instructions for backing up and doing a deep cleaning and I will post that for you if you wish. I'll leave the post open for a couple of days for your convience. Safe surfing...Phil

Thanks...pskelley
