Hi, I don't know how to solve this problem. I have a netbook that can't hold a strong wireless connection here (at home), and I wonder if its lack of hard drive space has anything to do with it. It goes from 'poor' to 'excellent' and back again many times a day, and the speed changes from 1.1 Mbps to 48Mbps. It was okay for a long time, and then once I started using the Internet for more work-related stuff, this started happening.

This is a wireless connection to a Dell Mini 910.
Router is a Linksys WRT54GS... it is quite old.
Modem is RCA DCM425, cable connection.
I am currently two feet from the router. Two yards away from it the connection changes.

I have one computer running wired from the router, and other computer running wonderfully wirelessly. Often all three are on.

Sometimes signal strength does not indicate slow connection but usually by actual usage. Do you experience slow browsing or download/upload performance? Low disk space could also be a factor.

The health of your computer can affect your Internet connection. Spyware and viruses can definitely cause problems, but your Internet connection speed can also be affected by add-on programs, the amount of memory the computer has, hard disk space and condition, and the programs that are running.

Hard drive space should not matter that much unless you're down to like 200-500mb (or less) free. If you have 1GB+ free, then it's most likely not that.

In addition to those "speed drops", that jitter (how much a ping varies) is very bad.. Does this happen to other devices connected to your router (both wired and wireless)?

If it only happens to wireless, try logging into your router (should be at http://192.168.1.1/) and change the wireless channel. Move atleast 3 channels in either direction (ex: channel 6 to 9+ or 1-3).

The Dell 910 has a 8Gb SSD. Clear out some old/temp files to give you some free space.

Download and run Inssider http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ . This will tell you if you which wireless channels are being used by your neighbours and you can adjust yours as necessary.

Yes, jayhz, this is the only partition. There's sometimes nothing left in terms of space. I run CCleaner often, removed anything that could be removed... An d it only happens, this change in speed, on this computer.

That is far too low for any hard drive capacity. Can you check again on Windows explorer or disk management for the hard drive report capacity. Also unstable wireless signal could also come from interferences such as cordless phone or wireless devices with same frequency range. Try reinstalling your network adapter and look for an updated driver available by your manufacturing support site. Check this link for changing wireless channel -> http://www.ezinstructions.com/wrt54gsetup.html
