I am running windows XP Professional SP3 and Internet Explorer 8.0 (IE8.0). When I use any of the search engines to search for a website everything works fine, until i click the mouse on a website. When I do this I am automatically redirected quickly to 3 different websites (one after another until it stops on the 3rd website). The 3rd website that my IE stops at is always some type of "search" page or some other type of useless page, like www.search-fast-results.com or hiddenshopper.com. I have also noticed that my favor ites have been deleted in IE. I have also noticed that all of my files on my hard drive are suddenly "hidden". I have to make sure that under my folder options I can view hidden files (all files on all drives, none of my folders are hidden that I have noticed).

I don't know if this is related, but the 1st thing that I noticed wrong with my computer, was when I tried to "check for updates" on the microsoft website. When i go to this website i get the attached error code. I followed all 3 of microsofts options to fix this error and none of them worked.

I have not been able to upgrade anything in windows. I am running Microsoft Security Essentials, which still updates, however is not able to find anything when I do a full system scan.

Edit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

After I installed the MBAM and ran it. I accepted the trial version and it has blocked outgoing threats multiple times. I also tried to open up IE and click on a website again. IE tries to redirect to another site, but hangs up now and won't go to the website.

I downloaded the aswMBR.exe file and tried to run it, however, nothing ever happened when I ran this executable. I tried disabling the MBAM and still nothing happened when I tried to run this file.

See the attached txt files, as requested... actually, I don't see the option to attach files to this reply... Why can't i attach anything?

I have tried shutting down the MBAB program, restarted my computer a few times, and no matter how many times I try to download or run aswMBR.exe, nothing happens. I don't know what to tell you but this program will not run on my computer. What can you do to help me figure this out?

Another thing... how come I can't add an attachment when I try to reply to this post? I don't have the option to attach anything like I did when i post this topic originally.

This particular forum doesn't accept attachments.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Ok, I got a much larger problem now. I tried to start up my computer this morning and it says the following:

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.

I am running 2 hard disks in a Raid system (RAID 0), and they are partitioned into 2 partitions. The 1st partition is my boot disk (main hard drive). When the computer starts, the 1st partition (we will call this C: from now on, and the second partition we will call D: from now on) will show as "failed" and D: will show as "Passed". Whether I try to start in safe mode or standard boot I get the same message. Please help.

It looks like failed drive.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28744&hl=hard+drive+diagnostic)
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps HERE
