My computer definitely has something. Here are the details:

- Programs running do not show up in my taskbar; I have to alt+tab to cycle through them.
- When I click on the Start menu, my most commonly used programs do not display. The window appears empty. I have to open the "All Programs" menu to find anything.
- When I minimize programs, I can sometimes see them disappearing into the upper left-hand corner of my computer monitor. It's as if my real taskbar has been shrunk and hidden in the upper left-hand corner of my screen, and the one on the bottom is an imitation.
- The programs in the bottom-right corner of my taskbar (like McAfee) do not open when I click on them there. I have to open them through my Start menu by looking them up under "All Programs."
- Something is definitely running on my computer that should not be and slowing it down. I am an online gamer and I'm usually running with smooth FPS and low latency, but since this started, my game has been freezing for just a few seconds every 30-60 seconds or so.
- Quick Restore is not available. Either my computer has not been automatically making back-up restore points, or this virus has destroyed them or otherwise hindered my access to them. (This computer is only about 5 months old and I've never tried restoring it.)
- The computer won't shut down or restart properly. Once it gets to the green "Shutting Down" screen, it stays there indefinitely, and I have to manually power it off. (I'm using Windows 7)

Worst of all, anti-virus software seems unable to run. I have McAfee and I downloaded MalWareBytes to try and remedy this problem. McAfee is able to get through a Quick Scan, but it finds nothing with that. When I try a full scan, it gets stuck at 4%. MalWareBytes is about the same, only it's unable to perform either a quick scan or a full scan.

I could do a factory restore, but I'd like to avoid that if I can. I could also take it in to my university's IT department as they do free virus removal for students. They were able to remove an incredibly malicious keylogger from my husband's laptop last year. However, that would mean having my comp out of commission for a few days, so I'd also like to avoid that if I could.

Any help?

More to come. MiniToolBox is currently freezing in the middle of its "Listing Installed Programs" phase. Going to restart my computer and try again at getting it to work.

It's a no-go on MiniToolBox and MalwareBytes. This virus seems to have locked them down. The former repeatedly gets stuck in the middle of "Listing Installed Programs," even in Windows Safe Mode, and the latter is still not running. I re-installed MalwareBytes and it won't scan. It freezes up after about 6 seconds of scanning.

Here is the log for aswMBR (I hope). It seemed to stop working after "Services Scanning." I waited a while for it to do something else and it didn't.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

GMER did not find any system modifications. There is nothing in the log to copy and paste.

I can't see anything malicious.

Update me on current issues.

I don't know why the scanners have been working this morning. I swear, I tried them and tried them yesterday and they would not work. Also, my running programs have been appearing in my taskbar as usual.

I have McAfee running a scan right now and it's at 70% with "1 potentially unwanted program" having been found. McAfee has never been able to get this far since this started; previously it consistently shut down at 4%. I'll let you know what the scan says when it completes.

I haven't tried my game to see if I am still getting strange lag spikes. Will try that soon.

There is only one explanation - computer gremlins :)
Seriously....sometimes restarting computer will cure issues.

McAfee was able to complete. The unwanted program that was quarantined was this.

Not sure if that was what was causing my issues.

Will let you know if the symptoms are persisting.
