Hello, my Dell XPS420 desktop was infected with the Vista Security 2012 rogue program. I had Norton AV installed but it somehow bypassed it. I followed the instructions here to clean the system (ran FixNCR.reg, RKill, TDSSKiller (to remove the rootkit that was causing browser redirects), and lastly, MBAM. It seemed to work. Afterwards I scanned the system with TrendMicro HouseCall, McAfee Sec Scan Plus, and Panda Cloud AV and they all indicate the system is clean. I also ran AVG PC Tune-up to clean odd ends.Interestingly, I downloaded and tried running Microsoft Security Essentials but it would not run. As I kept checking the computer I started noticing several Windows programs not running: Windows Security Center (it's not even listed under services), Windows Defender won't run, cannot turn on Printer, File or Public folder sharing or Network Discovery (the error reads "the specified service does not exist as an installed service"). I installed Comodo Firewall but one of its features, Defense+, will not run. I checked the repository (winmgmt/verifyrepository) and WMI repository is consistent. I was hoping to avoid a system re-install but I am not sure what to do next. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Broni. Thanks for looking at this problem. I have included all the logs you requested below except for aswMBR log which I'll include after reboot. Gotta tell you. Had a hard time running MiniToolBox. Norton did not like it at all and kept putting it under quarantine. Very curious to see what you find. The computer is actually running well (decent speed, no browser redirects, etc.). Few Windows program are not running though. Some more annoying than others. For example, printer share will not work and since my printer is connected to this computer I cannot use it with my laptops. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks again.

1. I assume Norton is just an AV program and Comodo is just a firewall. Is that correct?

2. Uninstall McAfee Security Scan Plus, typical foistware.

3. You have several registry keys missing....

Following steps involve registry editing. Please create new restore point before proceeding!!!
How to:
XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948247
Vista and Seven - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/create-a-restore-point-for-windows-vistas-system-restore/

Please go to Start=>Run (alternatively use Windows key+R), type regedit and click OK.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root
Right-Click Root and select Permissions...
Click Advanced.
Under Owner tab select the entry starting with you user name, example: Farbar(Farbar-PC\Farbar)
Put a check mark next to Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and click Apply and OK.
Under Security type while Everyone is selected put a check mark in the box under Allow next to Full Control.
Click Apply and OK.

Download Vista.zip file from here: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/files/download/9-registry-network-keys/
Unzip downloaded file.
You'll find several files inside.
Double-click legacy_wscsvc.reg and confirm the prompt.
Double-click wscsvc.reg and confirm the prompt.
Double-click legacy_sdrsvc.reg and confirm the prompt.
Double-click legacy_bfe and confirm the prompt.
Double-click bfe.reg and confirm the prompt.
Double-click legacy_mpssvc.reg and confirm the prompt.
Double-click mpssvc.reg and confirm the prompt.

Please go back to the the Root key again while Everyone is selected remove check mark in the box under Allow next to Full Control and close the registry.

Restart computer.

Post new FSS log.

Hi Broni,

1. Yes, Norton AV and Comodo Firewall. I do plan to switch to Norton 360 after all this is resolved.

2. Done.

3. Should have mentioned this. One of the Windows features that has been affected is System Restore. There are no restore points filed and I am unable to create a new one. In the System Protection screen the create box is greyed out with the comment "Restore point creation disabled by Group Policy". The Automatic restore points box is also unaccessible with the comment "Configuration is disabled by Group Policy". Not quite sure what to do next. I am assuming this will involve editing some registry keys but I don't want to risk it without some expert advice. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Broni,

Tried following your instructions but got stuck at the "Replace owner" step. When I clicked Apply an error window appeared with the message: "Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys". Not sure what to do next. By the way, I was able to enable System Restore again by going through gpedit.msc and unchecking and rechecking the "Not configured" box. I was able to create a restore point yesterday.

Is there a way to insert screenshots with this editor? I tried inserting a snip of above problem but could not do it. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Broni,

I followed the instructions in your link but I am afraid I am still stuck. Same error ("Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys"). In Permissions for Root, under Security, Everyone has only Read checked, OWNER RIGHTS has nothing checked, SYSTEM has Full Control and Read checked. In Advanced Security Settings for Root/Permissions, again SYSTEM has Full Control, Everyone has Read, OR appears as Special. Under Owner, the current owner is my User Name(Computer Name\User Name). The only other choice under "Change Owner to" box is Administrators (Computer Name\Administrators). Does this sound right?

Enable real administrator account: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-windows-vista/ and try from there.
Disable the account when done.

Hi Broni,
I just want to make sure I understand exactly what I'm supposed to do. I did enable the Real Administrator Account but I am a bit confused where to start from there. Do I still need to go into Root/Permissions/Owner, etc? If that is the case, my User Name is no longer a choice in the "Change Owner to" box. The choices are both called Administrator(s). The current owner is Administrator(Computer Name\Administrator). Or I am supposed to start from your Download Vista... step? I don't want to do something that may create more problems. Thanks.

Hi Broni,

I think I figured out what I was doing wrong. When I followed your instructions in Secure Mode I was able to reset Root Permissions, etc. without getting the error. So I followed your instructions and ran the files in Vista.zip exceptfor legacy_bfe because it was not there. I did not run bfe.reg either because I assume they go together. I ran FSS (still in Secure Mode) and I am including the log below. It appears several things are still not running. Should I try running the Vista files again? Is there some other place I can get the legacy.bfe file from? Thanks for your help.

So I followed your instructions and ran the files in Vista.zip exceptfor legacy_bfe because it was not there. I did not run bfe.reg either because I assume they go together.

My fault.
I updated Vista.zip so delete your file and download fresh one.
Unzip it.

Make sure you create fresh restore point.

You have to run following fixes:
bfe.reg
legacy_bfe
wscsvc.reg
legacy_bits.reg

Post new FSS log.
