Oh my stars, I got a virus ("XP Antivirus 2012") and followed instructions to remove it from bleepingcomputer.com.

Very well done, the computer seemed to be fixed except for a persistent MBAM notification that MBAM "Successfully blocked access to a potentially malicious website: 83.133.120.187 (and various other IPs) Type:outgoing." This pops up every few seconds. I have MBAM logs showing thousands of instances of this over several days.

Now, even though ESET didn't catch it initially, when I run an ESET scan, it now finds viruses that it cannot remove (actually it deletes one, but then it comes back). The virus is apparently in operating memory, so I ran an operating memory only scan to get a shorter log file, here it is:

Scan Log
Version of virus signature database: 6790 (20120112)
Date: 1/12/2012 Time: 6:29:30 PM
Scanned disks, folders and files: Operating memory
Operating memory » \GLOBAL??\a4cae2db\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB17937$\2764759771\Desktop.ini - a variant of Win32/Sirefef.DN trojan - cleaned by deleting [1]
Operating memory » svchost.exe(1572) - a variant of Win32/Sirefef.DT trojan - unable to clean
Operating memory » \\.\globalroot\systemroot\system32\mswsock.dll - error opening [4]
Number of scanned objects: 464
Number of threats found: 2
Number of cleaned objects: 1
Time of completion: 6:29:59 PM Total scanning time: 29 sec (00:00:29)

Notes:
[1] Object has been deleted as it only contained the virus body.
[4] Object cannot be opened. It may be in use by another application or operating system.

---------------------[THAT'S THE END OF THE ESET LOG]-------------

I'm assuming, maybe incorrectly, that the virus that ESET finds is responsible for the thousands of attempts to phone home that MBAM is blocking.

So, I downloaded OTL, and ran a quick scan with the default settings. I can post a log if that's appropriate. Also I have a hijackthis log. Should I post those?

Thanks so much for that!

1. I ran SecurityCheck.exe, but in the end, instead of displaying a .txt file, I got an error message titled "netsh.exe - Entry Point Not Found: The procedure entry point MigrateWinsockConfiguration could not be located in the dynamic link library MSWSOCK.dll"

2. Here is the text from the FSS.txt after running the Farbar Service Scanner:

3. When I ran the MiniToolBox a few things happened: (a) I got the same error message I got when I ran SecurityCheck. (B) I got an error message (three times in a row after clicking OK) titled "nslookup.exe - Ordinal Not Found: The ordinal 1108 could not be located in the dynamic link library WSOCK32.dll" © I got the following result.txt:

Okay, I ran the MiniToolBox again and I'm still getting a connection reset error when I try to post that log. Maybe it contains something that the website doesn't like, haha. I could email it if you like?

This sure is a lot to slog through, so thanks!

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
