So, my computer is incapable of opening programs. Not always, just after it has been open for a little while. I can open things no problem for the first 30 secs-1 minute but then anything I click does not open. It looks like it will open with the little loading icon but then just.. looks like nothing happened. What else is weird is that it only does this occasionally. Right now it is working, but before it wasn't. I ran a Malware Bytes scan but about 12-14 minutes into it the computer froze every time (3 times, all in safe mode. 2 after running Rkill and one without running Rkill)

This problem has been going on for a few days but today just got worse. Also worth noting is one of my programs no longer works, except in Safe Mode. In regular mode it tells me it does not exist but in Safe Mode I can run it fine. (FBK212.exe).

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/437246 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hi Kevin71,

:welcome: to Bleeping Computer.

My name is Jason and I'll be helping you with your computer problems. You can call me by my screename jntkwx or Jason is fine.

Some things to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please do not attach logs or put logs in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can also help.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • If you don't understand a step, please ask for clarification before continuing with any future steps.

Click on the Watch Topic button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

:step1: Please download and run Combofix:

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<
3. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes:
  • Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job. This is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Important:
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.
  • If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

In your next reply, please include:
  • Combofix log
  • How is your computer running now? Please be as descriptive as possible. Include any word-for-word error messages that you may have, and/or screenshots of strange behavior.

Regards,
Jason

Kevin71,

Looking good! :thumbup2:

It looks like you have Avast installed. Is this correct? Did you at some point have McAfee installed? (I ask because it appears you have remnants of McAfee still installed.)

:step1: I'd like to make sure we've cleaned up remnants of McAfee. Please download and run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool. Please restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.

:step2: Rerun DDS and post a new log in your next reply.

:step3: Rerun Malwarebytes
Open Malwarebytes, click on the Update tab, and click the check for Updates button.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

If you have trouble updating, troubleshoot Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Jason

Has Malwarebytes detected anything before it freezes?

Let's try rebooting into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu with several options. Press the down arrow key on your keyboard until Safe Mode with Networking is selected. Press Enter. Please see here for additional details.

Then try running Malwarebytes again (in Safe Mode).

I've tried running it several more times, both in and out of safe mode and each time it runs for 11-14 minutes before it freezes my computer. It has not found anything in the searches, though.

Kevin71,

:step1: Rerun Combofix
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    SecCenter::
    {86355677-4064-3EA7-ABB3-1B136EB04637}
    {3D54B793-665E-3129-9103-206115370C8A}
    {BE0ED752-0A0B-3FFF-80EC-B2269063014C}
  • Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

    Posted Image
  • Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt. Please copy and paste this log into your next reply.

:step2: Chkdsk
I'd like you to run checkdisk by clicking on the Start menu, in the search box type in: cmd. Then, right-click on the cmd program and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r and press the enter key. You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

:step3: Please try running Malwarebytes again after running chkdsk.

In your next reply, please include:
  • Combofix log
  • Malwarebytes log
  • How's your computer running now?

Regards,
Jason

Anytime I try to run ComboFix it gives me this message: (When running it NOT in Safe Mode)

-----Warning-----
Do rot run ComboFix in Compatibility Mode
Doing so may damage the machine

Also, my chkdsk utility has not been working for a while. I suppose I should have included that in the earlier posts but it is so rarely used it slipped my mind. Sorry.

When you say that chkdsk is "not working," what do you mean by that? Do you get an error message?
Regards,
Jason
