Good evening all,

Earlier this afternoon, my computer got some sort of virus/malware where a lot of my desktop icons started disappearing from the screen in rapid succession - along with several "warning" popups. I re-started the computer in safe mode and ran Malware Bytes and Super Anti-Spyware. Between the two of them, I think it may have gotten rid of the virus (?), however, it did not restore any of my desktop icons or start menu programs. Several of the folders in the Start Menu just say "empty".

I have done a little bit of research on Google and have been able to restore some of the default windows icons, etc., but still missing several, and am not sure how to get them back. In addition, unfortunately, I ran a cleaner program that deleted all my temp files. Due to a Google search, I fear this was a big mistake because it appears the virus may have just moved all the shortcuts, etc. to the Temp folder - from which they could have been restored, had they not been deleted.

In addition, I noticed that my computer is telling me that I need "administrator permission" to create shortcuts, change shortcut names, etc... when it never used to do that. My computer lists my profile as an administrator in the Control Panel, so I am not sure why it is doing that.

To be honest, I am really not sure what all is missing... or what else might be affected that I am not noticing. I have run the DDS scan and GMER scans. However, the GMER program would not let me run it as directed. The only options that I was able to select were "Services" "Registry" and "File". None of the other ones were available to click.

The Attachment feature would not let me upload the files - hopefully it is acceptable, but I have just copied and pasted the text below:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/437223 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Yup, I still need help if able. First thing I would like to do is see if the virus that removed my desktop icons and hid my programs is still on my computer. Once gone, I would like to see if there is any way to get them back?

Per the direction below - couple things:

- I do not have the Windows discs available, unfortunately.
- I have run a new DDS scan... the attachment tool will not let me upload them, so I have pasted the results below.
- I have a 64-bit system, so I skipped the GMER scan, per the direction.
- Just as a sidenote... after looking at the logs below - it looks like there are a lot of games installed that I didn't even know I had, nor do I want. I am not sure if they were downloaded as a result of the virus - just a thought.
- I also dont know what "Windows Defender" is... that isn't a program I intentionally installed.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

First thing I would like to do is see if the virus that removed my desktop icons and hid my programs is still on my computer. Once gone, I would like to see if there is any way to get them back?

To make your files visible again, please download the following program to your desktop:

Unhide.exe

Once the program has been downloaded, double-click on the Unhide.exe icon on your desktop and allow the program to run. This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives. If there are any files that were purposely hidden by you, you will need to hide them again after this tool is run.

This may take sometime, please let if finish.
===
If your start menu is still empty download and run this file.

Download this .exe file to your desktop and run it.
Windows 7 64-bit US English
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/fakehdd/win7-x64-sm-reset.exe
===

Just as a sidenote... after looking at the logs below - it looks like there are a lot of games installed that I didn't even know I had, nor do I want. I am not sure if they were downloaded as a result of the virus - just a thought.

If the games are shown in the Installed Programs list remove them using the Add/Remove programs applet.
===

I also dont know what "Windows Defender" is... that isn't a program I intentionally installed.
This program is from Microsoft.
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17

Read about it since you already have Sophos.
http://community.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Endpoint-Security-and/Use-Windows-Defender-with-Sophos/td-p/8159
I would disable Windows Defender and see if you get some speed improvement.

How to : Disable Anti-virus and Firewall...
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt
Note:

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause infiltration of an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.

Thanks for the help!!

I followed all of the directions above - it doesn't look like the programs worked to unhide the icons and programs.... I still have several folders in the start menu that just say "empty" when expanded. For example - the Mozilla Firefox folder says empty, even though it is clearly still on my machine since that is the browser I am using now. Same with Itunes, MS Office, etc.

The ComboFix Log is pasted below:

Did you run this program?

Download this .exe file to your desktop and run it.
Windows 7 64-bit US English
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/fakehdd/win7-x64-sm-reset.exe

===

If that fails then you will have to do it the long way.

Right click on each of the folders and selected Open, to open the start menu folder in Explorer. Then browse to C:\Program Files\<program name> (or whatever location the program is installed in), locate the main program's .exe file (it will usually have a name very similar to the program name and the same icon), copy and paste it into the start menu folder you have open. Then close the folders and look in your start menu again, the shortcut should be there and functioning!

So for example, the start menu folder SpeedCrunch show up as (Empty). Right clicked on the folder and selected Open, then opened C:\Program Files\SpeedCrunch and located the .exe file named "speedcrunch". Copy and paste that file into the start menu folder".

Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.10 and earlier versions... being exploited in the wild in active targeted attacks... update to Adobe Adobe Flash Player 11.0.1.152

Flash Player 11.0.1.152

On the top of the page you will be given an opportunity to download the version for your operating system.
Make sure you select appropriate version.

You will also have an option to install the Free! McAfee Security Scan Plus Un-check the box if you are NOT using McAfee's virus protection software.

For the users of Internet Explorer download version 11.
Flash Player 11 (64 bit)
Flash Player 11 (32 bit)
===

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Include in your download" this is not required. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

Please let me know what problem persists.

Bummer - I was hoping there was a way to avoid doing it all manually... I updated Adobe and Flash Player - is there a way to make sure the virus is completely removed? I have been avoiding logging in to any of my online accounts, just in case it is still present.

Thanks again for your help!

I see clean logs. Do this last scan.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
